Hi. I am a National Achievement $2500 award recipient. Are Achievement Awards renewable or are only Merit awards renewable?

Neither is renewable. The awards that are for 4 years are the school-sponsored awards and some corporate awards.

While we’re on the subject of renewing scholarships, fyi, the official NM portion of school-sponsored awards has to be renewed through the NMS Corp. each year. NMSC will send a form to student’s home address in early March, telling how to renew the scholarship on line. You just need to confirm that you still meet conditions of the award–still full-time student at that school, adequate GPA, etc. It’s a very simple process, but you have to do it to get the same award the next year.
This “official” NM scholarship is usually a very small portion of the school-sponsored awards (in my son’s case, his college gives a near-full-ride, but $750/year comes through NMSC) Deadline to renew was around March 25, I believe.

Bumping this because D2 just got her renewal letter. Does anyone have insight into what is an “adequate GPA”? My kid goes to a very difficult school (Harvey Mudd) where the average GPA at the end of sophomore year hovers around 2.8. Could she lose the NMF portion if her GPA is somewhere in the "2"s? First semester was P/F and she passed everything, and can only estimate this semester’s GPA. But next year she will have a “real” GPA on the books, and by NMF standards it might not look so hot… anyone know more about this? I have no idea how much (if any) of the school scholarship comes through NMF, either, and don’t know how to find out.

I don’t know the answers, but you could try calling NMSC and asking. My S isn’t sure if he will be in class or at a co-op job in the fall so I have to call about that.

S1 always got the renewal, but S2 did not get the renewal last year or this year. He was a $2500 award winner, although he is getting $1,000 each year for his NMF award. I am not sure if this is purely through the school. Are there any other $2500 award winners who know?

@kjcphmom If your S2 was a winner of the one-time $2500, then anything else through the school is NOT an official NMSCorporation sponsored award. A student can only be awarded one official NMSC scholarship. Therefore, if there was to be some sort of renewal application, it would be something from the school itself, not from NMSC.

^^^Thanks, that is what I thought but it is nice to have it confirmed from someone else. So grateful for the NMF awards for S1 and S2. Also grateful to the schools that give official and unofficial awards. Hope this continues for future students!
