So..I'm currently a junior and, as you have probably figured out through the title, don't have any AP classes this year! My GPA is 94% and I could've taken AP US history and AP bio (I had a 96 is my history class last year and 95 in biology) but wasn't interested in those subjects so I didn't choose them. Was that a big mistake? My guidance counselor told me that I shouldn't take any subjects that won't contribute to what I plan on majoring in (engineering), but I'm not so sure if I made the right choice now.
I have 5 honors classes and am taking 2 language classes (pretty selective program). I'm also one of few programmers in Robotics at my school. I plan on taking AP Calc, AP Stat and AP Chem next year but colleges basically look at junior year only..I'm so confused! Anyone have any ideas?

Oh and I don't plan on applying to Harvard or anything..a couple state schools like Penn state and stuff.

Colleges look at your AP scores from Junior year, but they still see what classes you took in your senior year. While I think you probably should have taken these to show that you took the most challenging course load available, I don’t think, depending on your college and ECs, it will be the deciding factor in your admission. It’s better, in my opinion, to do VERY well in the senior AP classes that are related to your major of choice and just say that the reason you didn’t take APUSH and AP Bio was because you didn’t feel they were focused on your major. Definitely make up for it with great engineering-related ECs to balance.

Thanks! Yeah I’m hoping the senior year courses can make up for this year. Besides Robotics I don’t have any other engineering-related ECs but I’ll try to find something else

Everyone will say, it’s fine if they aren’t related to your major, but to not take even one of two APs is really pushing it, especially since everyone and their mother takes APUSH.

^ I didn’t take APUSH because I hate history and it would’ve been a waste of my time.

@OP Many don’t take AP classes their Junior year, and fill up their Senior year. My counselor said the same about only taking AP classes that interest you and is related to your projected major. I will use myself in an example, this year (Junior) I’m taking AP Biology and AP Chemistry and my goal is to major in Microbiology or Biochemistry. I could take AP Lang, or APUSH, but Honors English 11 is just as fine, and American Studies II Honors is fine also. Don’t feel like you’re behind, because you’re not. My brother only took one AP class his junior year (well, sort of two, he took AP Calculus, but then dropped it lol) and it was APUSH and he took 4 his Senior year. Now he’s in college majoring in Sociology and minoring in History and he’s doing perfectly fine. He took the AP classes that interested him and related to his major. The 4 AP classes he took Senior was AP European History, AP Stats, AP Lang, and AP Human Geo.

I think you’re fine, but the new norm nowadays is that you have to take an AP class Junior year -.- Just make sure you take some Senior year, one, two, three or more, whatever you like is fine. :)

Thanks a lot, at least this gives me some hope. @CSIHSIS what exactly would I have gained my taking APUSH? I have no interest in it and it’s not even a prerequisite so what would be the point? If everyone is taking it, it wouldn’t help me stand out either. I was regretting not taking it but now I think I made the right choice because you say everyone takes it…
