Just talked to scholarship office and they told me there will no longer be automatic scholarships at IU. Scholarships will now be selective based on GPA and test scores. Really glad I am a freshman this year!!!

I’m not surprised. Purdue made this change in 2011. The state schools that still have automatic merit will be seeing more applicants this year!

Also heard through the grapevine that Kelley will be getting rid of DA within the next two years, but I don’t know how accurate that is.

It makes sense because Kelley is trying to gain more prestige among others in the USNWR rankings. It’s one of the only upper ranked programs that has DA.

Glad we’re all freshmen!

New information will not be available until July. A lot of students are going to have a unexpected surprise when they start to apply in August. Was an announcement made in Indiana about these changes?

This is very unfortunate news. The previous automatic scholarship program and the Kelley DA policy made IU an attractive target for talented students (especially OOS). We’ll have to see what comes out in July but the way that this is rolling out does not lead one to believe that the new program is in any way an enhancement over last year’s program.

First, I would not expect an enhancement. Maybe bthomp can respond since his/her (funny I don’t know which) son is older than my oldest one, but the highest automatic scholarship has been at about $9000 mark for instate students for at least 5-6 years. I think the program started in 2007. It’s purpose was to pull in talented students from IN-state and OOS. It’s been successful as the stats for incoming freshman classes has increased over since that time. There have been other modifications in the past. 5 or 6 years ago there were there automatic scholarship levels. Last year I believe there were only two. Requirements have increased also.

In response to yankee–I live in B-ton so read the IDS and the local paper most days. I’ve not seen mention of this. The IU trustees just finished meeting. I don’t know that this change would need to be discussed in their meeting, but it was not mentioned.
(They did approve tuition increases for the next two years. 1.75% for instate students and 2.75% for OOS by the way.)

I’m also going to throw this out there–IU words things with great care. The scholarships have always been selective in the sense that one needed a minimum GPA and test scores. I’m not sure if yankee used the exact words of the scholarship office, but it could be a change in language and little more. Wait and see.

rrah not sure if selective is the exact word they used but they told me that they want to be more subjective because so many good students were just missing the cutoffs. Got the impression they wanted a more “holistic” approach to deciding scholarships.
