Hello guys!

I know this is a weird situation but I did not take Calc 1 at all. However, I have taken Calc 2 during the summer of 2013 , Calc 3, and Linear Algebra by the end of this fall. And I am planning to take differentials by the end of spring. I'm planning to apply to UCD as either a biology or chem major. I finished all the prereqs except the ochem series(because of my cc didnt offer it) and the physics series(because of my cc didnt offer it), and the 2nd semester of bio for my biology major. For chemistry, I finished everything except the ochem series, and the entire physics with calculus series(this WAS offered at my cc) However, I also did not take Calculus 1 but took the rest of the math series. Will this affect my admission? How will this look like on my app? Should I apply for biology although selective because I have more prereqs finished or should I apply for chemistry because it is nonselective and therefore do not have to finish the prereqs? Thank you so much for your time!!

Hey! i’m going as the same major as you. I think the minimum requirement to even be considered for biology is for you to have calc 1 and calc 2 finished. Since you don’t have calc 1, I think you should apply as a chemistry major. I’m not sure though so don’t quote me on it. Maybe someone else can chime in?

How did you end up taking calc 2/3 and linear algebra without taking calculus 1?

I think my counselor bypassed the requirement for Calc 1 because she thought I was capable of taking Calc 2/3 and linear algebra without it. However, I didn’t realize it might bite me in the butt. Do you think it would affect my admission for UCD in bio and chem because calc 1 is a requirement? Or do you think UCD will let me slide because i took calc 2 and 3? Any thoughts?!

Did you skip calculus 1 because you had AP or other credit for it?

I had a 3 on AP Calc AB. But to my knowledge, UC Davis does not take a 3 for credit? How would this work exactly? I don’t really understand the situation I am in

http://catalog.ucdavis.edu/PDF/CollegeBoardAdvancedPlacement.pdf indicates that a 3 on AB gives 4 quarter units of credit but on subject credit at UC Davis. A 4 on AB or 3 on BC gives subject credit for Math 12, 16A, 17A, or 21A at UC Davis.

You may want to ask UC Davis about whether you need to take calculus 1 given that you have completed calculus 2 and 3 already.

Do you think I won’t be able to transfer because I’m missing the Calc 1 or since I have the two other Calc classes, they’ll let it slide? I don’t want to wait until next year just because of Calc 1

This is a side thought but would taking Calc 1 on the spring look bad since you took Calc 2 already? I’m actually not sure but I hope you can find the answer soon.

It doesn’t matter what I think; it matters what UC Davis thinks. Ask the transfer admissions office and your major department there.
