No clue what to do with my life.

I don't know if this is a common problem, but I don't have a great idea of what I should major in. I know I prefer math and science and even arts/music as opposed to social work and english, etc.

If there's anyone in college or in the job field who knows of a particular field that seems like there's a high demand for students and not that many people going for it, can you help me out?

Not sure exactly how to phrase the question, but...I actually want to avoid being a genius in something like nuclear physics and finding out nobody with that is going to get a job and will end up mixing catsup and water for dinner.

No takers?

Auctuary, the Statisics people

Anything I won't be...you know....WAY bored with? I like math and all, but not statistics.

Well the boring difficult jobs usually have less of a supply of the labor force, but then again, those are the ones being outsourced to India.

Geology. There is a dramatic downward trend in those majoring in the geosciences and the average geologist is 55 years old. Lots of opportunity there, just not many people think about it seriously.

Anyone have any input on what schools are really good at the geosciences?

Environmental stuff / something - just about anything in that field is a pretty good bet also - could include geology too :)

Check out the other thread titled ''Environmental studies'' - some very good info there.

Are you in college yet? Colleges offer tons of seminar for Freshman to explore different field of interests. No one expected you to decide a major right away. You can wait until your second year. For me, I’m majoring in Biology. It’s a good field. I can work in the lab, or go for a master and work in a pharmaceutical company or go to other grad school like med or dental school. Not sure if this is hot major right now but studying something you like make personal and financial struggles in college bearable. Why don’t you take a varieties of classes in the beginning to see what you want to do.

Geography, landscape architecture, chemistry.

I’m going to suggest Geology or even Hydrology as well… I am switching my major to Geology.

This forum really needs a Sciences Major section…

Depending on your location, healthcare fields such as pharmacy, PT, OT, nursing, etc can be good. If you like chemistry and math, you might enjoy the engineering field of materials science, which seems to be growing.

If you like math and geosciences, check out a branch of Engineering that deals with this - such as Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering. There are definitely jobs for grads in those fields.

Yeah seems like you may like the engineering field.

You could even look into Geological Engineering
