BTW—by affordable I not only mean state schools but I also mean schools that are historically generous with financial assistance.

@musicamusica, thank you. how do I decipher adorable and who historically gives deeply for needs and merit?

in wrong account. ha

D had logged into my iPad before. oops

Ah, that’s better. Sorry for the confusion of accounts. I’ll repost if I can.

I cannot retrieve my post. sorry.

BTW Brooklyn College voice dept has some excellent teachers. Several of them teach concurrently at some other big name conservatories. That’s just the sort of affordable option you might want to check out for undergrad.

Yes conservatories require essays too. This is a good time of year to look at application requirements. Many of the schools will take the info down in Jan and you have to wait until September to see it again. Essays do not vary much from year to year nor do the song requirements.

thanks so much.

Can’t resist jumping in and saying NO ONE is “keen on Wisconsin” but Lawrence is a great place haha. My d thought she was staying on the east coast too but ended up out there and is happy as a clam. Last year we got more snow here in New York than they did out there :). As others have said, cast a wide net for $. I’m sure you will get some great offers so go for it!

I like Wisconsin… just, well… winters look to be harder than even where I am in New England.

You’re in NYC. Lawrence is a NYC University partner for Posse. Check out the Posse scholarship. Possefoundation.org. It’s a full ride scholarship. There are other schools you will have to choose from (great schools). But since you’re a junior get to work on building your resume with leadership roles. Get involved in your school and community. Posse is looking for future leaders. And also everything they (pointing up) said. Good luck.

You have to be nominated for a Posse scholarship. Not sure who to approach.

SUNY’s Crane School of Music is known for its voice program - Renee Fleming went there! Still, it is far from NYC

I don’t mean to be rude, but it’s not wise to recommend a school because someone such as Renee Fleming attended it. Ms Fleming (Stephanie Blythe also went there) graduated from Crane in 1981, which in “music school years” is an eon.Her voice teacher is no longer there and while I’m not saying that the current voice faculty isn’t perfectly adequate, they are not renown- but neither was Patricia Misslin when Ms Fleming was her student back in the 70s!

Boston University, College of Fine Arts, School of Music has an awesome voice program. BU gives generous academic scholarships. I am applying as a Trustee Scholarship candidate. Temple University/Boyer in Philly(1 hour 20 min from NYC on Amtrak) is also generous with academic money. Concentrate on preparing for your SATs as they are considered in addition to GPA. If you can document your financial need, you will be eligible for even more. This is all before you ever open your mouth to sing. Talent merit funds are in addition to all of the above.

I’ll put a plug in for the instate public schools. Crane does run buses for the school breaks to NYC so transportation is not a worry. SUNY Potsdam’s Crane will stack academic and talent scholarships which can beat some of the more generous private schools. Many of son’s vocal performance friends have gone on for grad work at many of the private schools recommended on this site. They recently received an endowment for performing new operas. In addition, several of his friends studied in Europe with the vocal profs. Obviously, apply at many schools and go where you find the best fit both financially and musically.

Regarding Posse ^^^, you are correct, you must be nominated by your school. The selection process starts fall of senior year. Maybe ask your friend who got the free ride to Lawrence who nominated her (if she attended your school)?

Oh, and Vanderbilt is a NYC Posse school too (you mentioned you liked it).

thanks @clarinet13mom. I do hear fabulous thinks about Vanderbilt and I met with a rep at a school event. I will have to look further into posse. I was just inducted into the NHS this week so I’m hoping that helps me show that I’m a ‘future leader’ and giving back to my school & community @Dradsmom! @sjd2015. good luck with BU. I plugged my numbers into Temple/Boyer NPC and they didn’t come back close to other places aid wise. I was surprised. Vanderbilt, Rice, etc all offered me almost 100% need based aid via the NPC but not Temple. Sigh.
I’ve also been selected as a YoungArts winner this year. I hope that helps me in some way. Not sure.
