My local paper criticized it for being too theatrical, but that's what i LOVED about it. I thought it was pulled off really well in movie format. I found it kind of distracting that some of the dialogue was pulled straight from parts in the musical that were sung, because the lines still sounded lyrical as speaking portions (sometimes they rhymed). However, the talking isn't really what's important in a musical, so I didn't really care very much. I was so glad they had the original cast (for the most part) play the parts. They were fantastic (although, i must admit, i had trouble believing that Mark could possibly be straight, lol).

I wasn't sure what people would think of the movie who weren't already into rent, but my friend camed and she liked it a lot. So i think it can appeal to an audience behind musical theatre geeks (i'm certainly not one) and rent-heads.

I know! And to me he sounded like he wanted to be singing it! Same with the "does she have a new man?" "What's his name?" "Joanne" part. There were others too. I think they could have done a better job writing dialogue. It was a little flat. Still though, the strength of the original was there all along and the original is fantastic.

I never got to see the original... my mom grounded me, so i couldn't go with theater at school...
but overall, I liked it. I'm not a major fan of depressing movies like that, so I didn't LOVE it, but people who love the plotline of RENT the original would love this movie.
The music was great too...
and yeah I kept thinking Mark is gay... though he's not...
I'M SO IN LOVE with MARK!

I saw it. It was really close to being really good, but not quite there. Some of the cinematography was very odd. The scenery bothered me.

One of the amazing things about Rent when it came out on stage was that it was able to capture the essence of NYC on a stage. Putting it actually in the city and not on a stage removes a lot of the theatrical merit IMHO.

It was solid, I'd give it a B or B+, but not great.

I agree that the cinematography wasn't perfect. Like the beginning of I'll Cover You the shot was just Angel and Collins walking. It was so weird.

I loved Light My Candle though. Without Me was done pretty well too.
