no id/pass

I was wondering when do we get our ID/pass. for our Caltech applications ? App. one month ago I received an e-mail from caltech confirming that my application was complete. but still there's no any "status check" thing yet... do they wait until they get the mid-year reports to send us our IDs ? would it be good if i called them ?

You never get a status check ID. Unless things change between EA and RD. They just send a decision when decisions are ready.

Really? Reject after missing materials is meaningless !!!

If you're missing materials, they'll let you know

calm down people! stop worrying.
They'll let you know if you are missing something.
You can also email them if you are really paranoid.
They'll send you letters! So, be patient.

ok , but how will they notify us about or acceptances/rejections ? If there's no account to check your app. status what are they going to do, will they just mail their decisions ?

Yes. Decisions were mailed for EA.
It will probably be similar for RD (no e-mail, no online checking)

:)

huh, no e-mail?... but it will at least say in the online application, wont it? Any ideas when the decisions are made? I guess its by the 2nd week in March.

Well I had to check my application account at MIT to see the decision. They haven't even sent an e-mail about informing me they already had decided. To be honest, although MIT's CS is one of the most respected depts it has one of the worst web pages I have seen so far.

No, as arwen said, snail mail only.

She is wrong then probably, because some1 from Caltech replied to me I will get an e-mail with admission decision by April 15. However, I hope it will be sooner than March 15.

from the site:
Caltech Undergraduate Admissions: The Admissions Process:
How We Make Decisions

"Decisions
After we finalize all our decisions, we mail them to you. If you have been deferred in the early cycle or waitlisted in the regular cycle, you can submit materials that contain new information or write a letter indicating your interest in attending Caltech."

Anecdotal, but: judging by my own experience from last year's RD round -- decisions were emailed to internationals (only internationals. If you're domestic, wait for the letter.) a bit after they were put in the post, but only (apparently; this was certainly true for me) the rejections and waitlists. Acceptances showed up by mail alone. I do not know whether this will still be true for this year's applications, but it's very likely that you'll need to rely on the mail. For a tech-heavy school, we are very paper-bound.

Summum: wait for the paper. It will not hurt you. Caltech mails decisions a bit before other schools, in general, anyway, so you'll still probably find out before most other schools get back to you.

And don't panic.

surrealist, 2007/2006 a similar discussion came up on CC and someone said
that the reason that online/e-mail notification of acceptances was not
done had something to do with "security" and that Caltech had tried it
a while back but someone had hacked into the system or something like
that....apparently this is still the reason for the mail-only notification of acceptances

...speculating

:)

so...what happens if your decision gets lost in the mail? i've had several cases where we've received mail for other addresses & i guess our mail has gone to other addresses as well

For EA the Caltech website said if you don't get your letter in a period of time tell them and they will send another.

For EA, my letter was lost. So I called them. They sent me another one. I got that in 3 days. The original letter showed up 3 weeks later in the mail box.lol silly USPS people.

Why nobody write on this Caltech thread, i really want to go this school. Because i can study in sunny California by my favorite major with students who have a good sense of humor. When do we find out our decisions?
