A friend and I live in the same city in Texas and attend the same high school, and he got a columbia interview but I still have not received word of an interview. What does this mean? Does it have any indication of admissions, or is it purely random, depending on when each application is processed? I'm a bit worried. Ok, I'm really worried.

LoL, please relax pinkearmufs, interview is very random since it's not determined by the admission committee but by the alumni committee. Whether you get an interview or does NOT have anything to do admissions, there are several Columbia ED acceptees on CC who will tell you that they did not receive an interview.

Unlike Harvard, Columbia does not require an interview to accept applicants.

there are probably several interviewers for your area, and in all likelihood you two were assigned to different ones; hence the discrepancy

I know many applicants who Columbia has accepted without an interview. This holds for both decision rounds. Sometimes, a region is not interviewed because alumni interviewers are completely overloaded. Things can happen.
