My sister requested an interview and didn't get one. UChicago most likely does have someone in the area. Can we read between the lines here and say she's a likely reject or is it really "arbitrary" like the rest of the admission process. Essentially does getting a UChicago interview have much significance?

I suspect it depends on when it was requested. Chicago does not seem to be big on alum interviews.

January the 3rd, it was before the deadline.

Alumni interviewer here. It basically depends on availability of interviewers. This year, Chicago had so many applicants that many alumni had to take multiple interviews. I know I had to decline one because there were just too many. When I declined, Office of Admissions told me they’d try to find another interviewer to accommodate the student, but it’s not always the case that they can find one.

It likely says nothing about admissions potential.

Thanks for the answer :)

Framed-- definitely do not worry-- we assign interviews based on the availability of our interviewers, and were not able to accommodate every student who requested an alumni interview this year, even if the request was made before the deadline. Please encourage your sister not to worry; interviews are not a required portion of the admissions process, and although we try to accommodate as many students as we can, not receiving an interview is not a negative sign from us.

Thanks for the answer! I’ll send her a link to this thread, should definitely help.

Don’t worry at all! I didn’t receive an off-campus interview when I applied, and was worried that I’d somehow been dismissed as an applicant - but it doesn’t mean anything. They’re not required.

I applied early action, and though I indicated that I would like an interview, I didn’t get one. I guess there aren’t too many alumni living in my area. I was ultimately deferred.

I was contacted today by an alum about an interview. I’m a bit confused. Since I applied early action, why am I being contacted now for an interview? And isn’t it a little late for interviews? I thought they were over by mid-February, but this one will be in March. Thoughts?
