No longer staying in dorms.

Hey guys, Recently I have made the decision that staying in the dorms at Rutgers Newark, most likely will not be an option for me, due to my financial aid situation. So I am thinking of just raising my Stafford Loan due to my mother being denied to her credit, and just commuting there. There's one problem though, I am already all signed up for the dorms, is there a way to cancel my room and boarding fee, and no longer pay room and boarding, and just pay for my tuition? And if so, will there be a fee?

Contact the housing office. Let them know that you cannot afford to board and that you will be commuting from home. Ask what paperwork you need to fill out to request a housing deposit refund and to be released from your housing contract. If they give you a hard time keep asking to speak to someone higher up. Make clear that the aid you have received is not enough to board, and that the only way you will be able to attend is of you are released from the housing contract.

Good luck!

Ok thank you for the help…

Also will I get allot less money if I cancel my housing contract?!?!

I told them I could not afford to live in the dorms either (after I signed my housing deposit and made my selections) and they granted me my release from the contract. I was not refunded the money, but I was released from the contract.

As far as receiving less aid, yes, you will most likely receive less now because they were basing that on the fact you were going to be dishing out about $13k on the dorms. I was told that now that I’ve been released from my housing contract I will get a more updated official award letter in August now with the more accurate figures about the money I’ll be receiving.

Do as the other poster said and just tell them you simply cannot afford to come to Rutgers without being released from the housing contract and you should be just fine. That’s exactly what I did and I just received an e-mail two days ago telling me that I would be released. Good luck.
