My parents asked me to fill out the Fafsa and apply for need based aid, so I indicated on all of my college applications that I wanted to apply for need based aid. After filling it out, it is apparent that I would not receive any aid. Should I just not submit any documents to me schools and let the deadline expire or should I send them messages withdrawing myself from consideration for financial aid? I'm afraid they will consider my application incomplete or be less inclined to accept me for being inconsistent.

If you decide not to apply for financial aid (which would, by the way, entitle you to student loans, should you choose to take them), then send each school admissions office an email letting them know.

You should apply anyway if you are applying for other scholarships. Many local scholarships require it.

^^^ Since many schools take a student’s financial need into consideration in making admissions decision, this is BAD advice!

If you are not planning to seek financial aid, let the schools know immediately.

Kat, this is the second thread in a very short time in which you’ve given a very bad advice. Where do your get your information? Perhaps you should educate yourself about ins and outs of financial aid and admission to need-aware schools before dispensing any more advice about the subject.

Yes, do let the schools know. Some schools admissions offices send the list of accepted students to fin aid and wait for a package to be put together. If you didin’t complete the process, that could cause hold ups.

If the school is not need blind for admissions, yes, it can affect the decision.

The OP can still borrow from STAFFORD and parents can apply for PLUS if a FAFSA is filed and that does not count as financial aid to a school.

OP said: " After filling it out, it is apparent that I would not receive any aid."

Because your parents’ AGI was more than $X, I assume?

Make sure your source of your conclusion is accurate.

It all depends on family situations, but for hypothetical one example:
Family of 3
AGI of $125k = need-based aid in the 1000s of dollars
AGI of $160k = no need-based aid

If your conclusion is accurate then DO notify the schools (almost all are “need-aware” not “need-blind”) that you will not asking for any need-based aid

In order to be eligible for student loans you need to complete the FASFA. Also, there are scholarships (school and local) that do require a FASFA be completed. I would say fill it out anyway.

Applying for institutional need-based aid is different that completing FAFSA.

The vast majority of schools do not take financial need into consideration for admission. If that is a concern the OP should check with the schools s/he applied to.

Would it hold up or void my application if I do not complete my financial aid paperwork?

No, but you should contact all the schools to let them know you don’t intend to fill it out so they aren’t waiting for it.
