My friend was thinking about not taking a math or science next year (senior year). You only need 3 math credits and 3 science credits to graduate. He has already met this requirement. Because he has taken Alg 2 honors, Geometry honors, and Pre-calc honors, the only math left is AP Calc. Same thing for science, only AP Physics or AP Bio.

His reasoning is that every class he has taken was honors and that will make up for not taking a math or science. He wants to go into criminal justice and says they are useless to the major.

My question is what will colleges think about this? How much will this hurt his chances of getting into say Pitt or Penn State? (Our state schools)

I didn’t take a math or science my senior year because I really have no interest in either of the subjects and I already had all of my requirements filled. Instead, I took the remaining periods and filled it up with more English classes and Spanish 5, classes that fit with what I want to do in college. I got into Penn State no problem.

I have 2 math classes (AP Calc and a blow off one) and AP Lit, and that’s basically it. I got into all the colleges I applied to without much science or history, though I did take an AP history class. I think it all depends on the clege’s mood and amount of other science and math people.

PS: AP Calc isn’t that bad. I almost didn’t take it this year, but I’m glad I did because it’s just the next step. even if you don’t pass the AP exam, it’s a good practice for college!

You don’t have to. My school requires 4 math credits and 3 laboratory sciences credits. Colleges won’t look down on it. It all depends on your career choice. For example if you want to become a Veterinarian, they recommend you take math for all 4 years same with science.
