I'm not gonna sugar coat anything - I hate Math. And I'm awful at it. I'm currently a Junior in Honors Pre-Cal and it's the only class I have a B in (I get A's/A+'s in all of other classes, which happen to all be AP).

My problem is - next year, I only have three options for Math, and they're all AP maths. (AP Calc AB, BC, and Stats) - and I cannot envision myself doing well in any of them. I try so hard in Pre-Cal, harder than I do in any of my AP classes, but still, I end up with like, an 87 at the end of the quarter.

...I want to major in Political Science, and then go into Law. I've wanted to be a Lawyer since I was 5 years old, and I don't imagine that I'll suddenly want to become an Engineer anytime soon... so how bad would it be if I drop math next year?

(If I drop math next year, I'll enroll myself in two AP histories to make up for it)

What schools are you aiming for?? It seems like you have great grades overall, and I understand your struggle with math (pre calc sucks!!). It is totally possible to get accepted to college with no senior math…

Stats is really easy and it’s tailored to people who like to memorize rather than understand the concept. It’s really easy to fake your way through even if you’re not good at math by just memorizing facts and processes. Your math skills really only need to be at a algebra II level if even that.

It almost feels more like a social science class than a math class sometimes. I think you would be okay in it.

AP Stats is supposed to be reasonable even if you are not great at math and most schools like to see four years of math. Have you considered AP Stats?

I’ve considered AP Stats, yes - and I’ve read online that it’s pretty easy (I heard the term “How to Use Your Calculator 101” to describe it) - but, at my school, I have friends who are in AP Calc BC and AP Stats at the same time, and they’re struggling in Stats and excelling in Calc, which contradicts everything I’ve read about it.

Most colleges look down upon on people who don’t take senior math. I highly suggest you take a math class, preferably AP Calculus BC. Calculus doesn’t have much to do with precalc if that’s what worries you. If its any comfort to you, I was terrible in precalc. I’m taking AP Calculus BC now and I find it much easier than precalc.

When it comes to the stats vs. calc debate, I have to say that it depends in whether you are good at pure mathematics or word problems and logic. If you are good at mathematics in general, take calculus, but if you are good at word problems and logic, take stats.

why not take AP statistics? just because your friends who are in BC don’t do well in it, doesn’t mean its a hard class. try to find out what the class really entails.
if you struggle/hate precalc, definitely don’t take calculus BC. a lot of the kids in my BC class who don’t have a strong foundation in precalc are really struggling to even pull off B’s(granted my teacher is pretty tough on those who aren’t super strong at math). calculus AB is not a bad option either, as it is less analytical than BC.

How did you do in geometry? AP stats is more similar to that in terms of how you think …more “proof” based. The math in stats is easy, the difficulty is that you need to know when to use specific models or procedures to set up your work. One D had bad teacher and basically taught herself…5 on AP but thought it was a bit of luck that she had studied the right things in review book (in effort to learn something teacher didn’t cover).

I think you should take math as a senior. an 87 is not a bad grade either… a B is not the end of the world, especially is you’re taking honors/AP. I took honors Algebra II freshman year, averaged a 74. then I took honors geometry averaging a 90 (all tests were open note because of proofs). When I got to Pre-Calc I realized that it takes me a long time to understand concepts and that’s why I didn’t excel at Algebra II so I dropped down to CP and averaged a 96. I’m currently taking CP Calc and averaging a 92 so I think it definitely paid off for me to drop down and I still got into college. There’s a girl in my CP Calc class that’s doing worse than I am and she got into Emmanuel. It’s not a big deal to get lower than an A in a class especially if you are doing so well in every other area of study. So if you end up taking math and getting a B I think you’ll be fine.

You can definitely get into TempleU with no senior math,I know a few people in my class who have been accepted with no math thins year…the others I dont know.
