No matter how bad gpa is, rank more important than gpa?

Hey, I was wondering if a high rank can make up for low gpa for top schools (given ECs are spectacular). My school is very competitive, and its very hard to get a "A". Under these circumstances, I rank top 1%. Will this be considered? Is rank more important that gpa? Any input appreciated!

So what happens if my school doesn't rank, and we have 925 kids in the class?

i would hope that rank counts more, not because i have a great rank (i dont) but because the very principle of the thing makes it unfair in certain kids favor.

it would make sense for rank to be more important, I mean if everyone gets B's all the time an still stays in the top 1 percent, that's gotta tell you that the school ain't no joke.

At some schools, like UIUC, rank is determinative, GPA is not. At others it has little or no importance. Nevertheless, those that do not consider rank generally do consider your course work and grades in light of what they know about your school and its competitiveness.

i think rank is more important because colleges reconfigure your gpa to their standards anyway. they'll also get your school profile which should explain the grading system and grade distribution from the last year. hope this helps. good luck!

rank matters because schools are interested in how you perform relative t your class mates. after all, the most logical comparison is to compare applicants who have had the same academic opportunites and resources.

is it true that all schools rank even if they don't report it to you. Like, what would you put on the application? Would you think they have that information for colleges but just dont tell students? You know what the idiot counselors at my school told me. " We dont report rank and GPA because it can give you an advantage over other students applying with lower rank." I was thinking "no &%&$, that's kind of the point" but do you think that theres any schools that blatantly just dont keep track of rank?

So, regardless of how low the GPA, rank plays a more significant role right?
Also, I took 11 APs and 3 CC courses, which explains my "average" gpa.

this isnt good for me, because i was terrible during my frosh years, but now am doing very well. my rank is messed up because of my early poor work, but now im getting a's and a 5/5 W gpa. i hope they can somehow forgive that.

all i can say is, if you've tried your best, if you've taken the hardest courseload you can, if you've gone beyond the minimum course requirements, then you should give yourself a pat on the back. as long as your GPA is not ridiculously low, you are aay. it's alright. that's what i believe.

i go to a pretty leniant school for grading. what if I transferred to a difficult school where the highest gpa is like 3.7 and mine is 4.0, would i be number 1 even though i didnt have as hard grading?
