In addendum to my above explanation, Tufts syndrome is used quite frequently as an ego-crutch for those who get rejected who thought quite highly of their chances of admittance. (ahem, ahem)

Well, it's Thursday mid day out here in California, HAVE YOU STILL NOT HEARD?!!??

Nothing today, either. My D has already called earlier today, and now GWU says they mailed it on April 4th, whereas last week they said it was already mailed out on March 31st. I think that they may not be giving accurate information! Maybe they don't even know themselves! I'm sorry to say this, but this chaos doesn't speak very well for GWU.

Worried Dad,

I was told by Admissions that my D's results were mailed on Saturday, March 26. When the letter arrived on Monday, April 4, it was postmarked March 31. (She was W/L'd, by the way.)

As I recall, this application cost more than any other school we applied to. You'd think if they won't provide a little better service, they could at least tell the truth.

worrieddad, When I called the other day, the girl said she didn't know when my app was sent b/c it is supposed to be marked on the file, but it wasn't on mine. I don't know if I've gotten anything yet b/c I'm in DC right now visiting schools, and I've pretty much given up on GW. It wasn't one of my first choices anyway, but I wanted to go look at it b/c they gave me a scholarship. The bad service and the fact that I had to wait so long turned me off a lot, and after seeing American U today (who gave me a bigger scholarship than GW), I'm not even going to bother with GW. Good luck to yuor daughter!

so it really looks like the late postmarks got either rejected or waitlisted eh?

actually i got in with a postmark apr.2 and it arrived today

So this is GWU's form of rolling admissions? :-)

How frustrating this must be for you. We wait a long time for mail as it goes through a pouch in the US to get to us. My son already heard from GW, but is waiting to hear from one other school. He finally emailed the admissions person today to see if they would release the information by e-mail. At this stage of the game, with decisions needing to be made in a few weeks time, it is important to have the information. It is surprising how inefficient they are on this end, since in the "visit" aspect of salesmanship, they were among the best...

WorriedDad, I feel so badly for your D. If it doesn't come in tomorrow's mail, I think you should call the school yourself and make some noise. I'm sure she doesn't want to wait out the weekend again, and they'll be closed. Keep going up the food chain until someone gives you an answer - she deserves an answer!!!

I agree. I think that YOU, not your D should demand an answer. Unfortunately, it is highly likely that your daughter will not be accepted this late in the game. Therefore, I think it's kind of mean to make her call an admissions office to possibly find out that she has been rejected over the phone. If she truly want to find out, then that's her choice, but don't make her do it.

I wouldn't do that anyway.

She finally got the letter today: No. She had SATs = 1270 and is in the top 10% of her class. According to the guide books, she should have been right in the mid-range for GWU (GWU last year, 25th-75th%ile =1180-1370).
Back to the drawing board! :-(

WorriedDad, I'm so sorry to hear that. I was really hoping she'd get good news. Let us know how everything ends up for her.

Worried Dad, add my sympathies to the stack. I feel your pain. There seems to be a huge increase in applications across the U.S. this year. I guess it is a combination of the mini baby boom and all of the emphasis being placed on college as the only route to success. In addition, grade inflation seems very inconsistant - allowing some students to get spectacular grades for less than spectacular work. I miss the 60s! Simpler times.

Yes, it's devastating. The fact is, though, that today it's college or Burger King..there's virtually no middle ground of good paying union jobs anymore: those jobs all went overseas. So there are about the same number of schools as 30 years ago, and EVERYONE applying to them. How do you review 20,000 applications on a personal level? In my day (yes, the 60's), you had a one-on-one interview with someone who would sit at the decision table and tell them about you. Today it's all stats, not people.
We are scrambling!!! She is wait listed at all her schools (except Brown and GWU: no go's). Any information as to what has worked in the past to get accepted off a waitlist (a longshot, I know) woule be greatly appreciated.

WorriedDad,
First I think you should post your D's situation on the parents forum. It is unbelievable how helpful and informed those parents are!

Also, use the search feature to search for help on the waitlists. LOTS of threads about this recently. I've also read from others on here recommending CC's waitlist service - I don't have experience with it myself, but have seen others recommending it.

There is also a thread about schools still taking applications.

The only advice I can give is to have your D's guidance counselor call each of the schools on behalf of your D. He/She will also be able to possibly get a feel on how the schools view your D. Have D write passionate letter and send current grades, expressing her desire.

GOOD LUCK!!!
