No NMF $$ at BYU?

I was told BYU does not offer any NMF scholarships.
Are there any other opportunities to earn $$ or benefits with the NMF award at BYU?

We are getting stacks of admissions mail every day, which DD will not even look at. She is set on BYU. We live in FL, so there will be extra expenses for us.

BYU is already heavily subsidized, so I have not heard of additional merit aid. Just assume that the NMF was part of what got her in.

There “may” be some money for NMF. We were told that it is possible. It is interesting, D has a 35 ACT, NMF and 4.0 top of class but may not get much at BYU. I guess rates are so low they don’t really have to give scholarships. Plus they don’t have the huge endowments like Ivies and other flagships do.

From the BYU website:

“Also, BYU-sponsored National Merit Scholarship recipients will be selected from among the Heritage Scholarship applicants. To be considered, candidates must be selected by National Merit Corporation as a finalist, list BYU as their first-choice university, and complete the Heritage Scholarship Application.”

Heritage Scholarship

"The Heritage Scholarships are the most prestigious awards offered by Brigham Young University to incoming freshman students. These eight-semester, full LDS tuition scholarships are named after LDS men and women who have made significant contributions to the Church and the world. Recipients will be chosen based on their high achievement in spiritual, academic, and extracurricular endeavors. From among the applicants, a number of students with unusual gifts and accomplishments will receive the Heritage Scholarship named after the President of the Church.

To apply, students must have a minimum composite ACT score of 31 and a minimum unweighted high school grade point average of 3.85 (A=4.0). If the ACT score is 32 or higher, a student may still be considered if the unweighted high school grade point average is at least 3.50. Potential candidates must complete the Admissions and Scholarship Application and the Heritage Scholarship Application by January 15. To receive these applications, contact the Scholarship Office."

I’ve heard that there are usually 10-20 NMF recipients at BYU. There was one from my Stake about 5 years ago. Also, I believe Stephanie Meyer (Twilight) was a NMF at BYU.

There are a lot of NMS attending BYU. According to the National Merit Scholars website BYU had 90 in 2009. BUT BYU doesn’t offer a specific NMF scholarship to all those attending.

Well, we got the NMF letter today, and looked up the college opption on the website, and you are correct, BYU is an option.

DD stats: ACT 29 & unweighted GPA 3.89

I guess we better work on that ACT score!!!

If DD’s SAT is 1390 & UWGPA 3.89, will the ACT of 29 hold her back?

Not sure how well SAT is substituted for ACT.

DD newest SAT scores are 1550
BUT her one time of taking the ACT she got a 29.

Do you think they will look at the SAT as a comp?

Or should we start retaking the ACT to get it up?

DD says the ACT was a much harder test for her.

My daughter was an NMF and has a full tuition scholarship at BYU. She is currently a junior. What we learned is that to receive full tuition, she needed the grades and test scores to qualify for a multi year scholarship to get the NMF scholarship. She also has to keep her grades at a certain level in order to continue to receive most of the scholarship money (about 70%) of it. So the only difference between someone who was NMF and someone who wasn’t is that she would still get some money if she no longer meets the scholarship criteria.
