No "No Scholarship" Notification

I applied by the Dec. 1 deadline. I have not, however, received the "No Scholarship" notification, nor have I received a scholarship as far as I know.

Am I missing something, or should I contact USC about this? Is anyone in the same boat?

what does your status read?

I’m in the same boat, adamsawesome. However, my friend got the “no scholarship” letter and she lives five minutes away from me so it’s not a post office issue… I have the “received fall grades” status.

I never received the letter either, I think mine may have just gotten lost in the mail though not really sure. I’m in NY if that matters.

My status reads “Your application is being reviewed by the admission committee. We will mail notification of their decision by April 1. If for some reason you don’t receive our written notice, we will be happy to provide the results over the phone beginning April 11th.”

Everyone I know at my school who applied received the letter or has the scholarship by now.

I live in ct and got the letter a few weeks ago. I was never asked to send in my midyear grades but I did so anyway. My status is now “forwarded”

I don’t know why a bunch of people got the letter and a bunch didn’t . It may be the same reason why people have different statuses, admissions has their own way of doing things I guess.

Adam, my son is exactly like you (same status, no letter). And everyone else from his school either received the letter or a scholarship, while he did not. It seems there are a few others in the same boat. Unlike others who received the letter, he also did not receive a followup request for mid-year grades.

Yup, I was never asked to submit my grades, did anyways because I assumed I had to. Anyways, I’m thinking I should just ask them about it. It does seem like there’s quite a few of us though. Seems odd that we would all just be forgotten.

Yes, it does make one feel forgotten. On top of that, two of my son’s friends who received the no scholarship letter AND the grades request had already submitted their grades online and/or had them sent in by their schools. They seem like the opposite of forgotten.

Luckily, my son’s not really following any of this status stuff - that’s all me.

I think it couldn’t hurt to call the admissions office and ask how many of the “no scholarship” letters they sent out, however, you may want to first find out[ if you can] how your GPA and SAT scores compare to the kids at school who have received either scholarships or the no scholarship letter. If yours are relatively just as good as students who have received scholarships, and better than teh "no scholarship " letters kids, then it may be that they only sent the no scholarship letters to those that are not likely to be admitted in late March?? [ this is only MY guess, and is no more accurate than trying to read tea leaves in the bottom of a cup, so no flaming please]. I could be totally wrong, and the lack of a letter could be as random as the changes in student application statuses online seem to be. The USC admissions/ financial aid office does not have the reputation of consistently running like a well oiled machine.

Menloparom, of my son’s friends’ stats who received the letter, one has lower, the other slightly higher stats. All 3 have the same regional rep. I would hope that this is not a clue about being in a wave or a pile or whatever. That would be awfully transparent of USC. And besides, shouldn’t every student who applied by the scholarship deadline be informed that they did not get one but are still in the running for admission?

jazz… All letters of “no scholarship” should have gone out. Since the Explore dates for scholar interviews are in progress, there won’t be more Trustee/Presidential-by-interview slots open by this point. One can only assume there was a glitch in the mailings, post office issues, or (worst case scenario)–a student’s file that is not being tracked correctly. I would suggest any student to contact their regional rep to explain several friends have already received that letter, but since you did not–is there some way to check that their file is still active and accounted for?

Just saying… while they are processing 1000 invitation letters and 19,000 “no scholarship” letters, there might be some mailing problems–but USC could reassure you that your student’s file is still in the proper pipeline.

madbean, perhaps I didn’t explain myself. We are under no illusions that my son is still being considered for one of the Trustee/Presidential scholarships.

And yes, when several of his friends received the “no scholarship letter,” my son did email his regional rep. She told him that he “should have received the letter” as well, and she was not sure what happened. So he felt better, and thought no more about it.

But then, recently, all of those same friends received grades requests, even though they had voluntarily submitted their grades online or their schools (one of them the same as my son’s) had automatically submitted. Again, he did not receive this letter. Now, there seems no way to inquire without seeming a bit insane: “Hello, admissions rep person, I submitted my grades myself, but I’m wondering why I still didn’t get the “send your grades letter” that my friends got, even though they submitted theirs themselves, too.” See what I mean?

Ahh, I see. Sorry for the mis-read.

Is your son applying to Thornton (looking at your screen name)? What about the other kids he knows that you have mentioned?

We’ve seen that the non-CLAS schools do their reviews in strange and non-conforming ways. For instance, there was a year when SCA lagged a lot of other schools in all ways, making for many frustrated status-watching kids/parents. And since talent/audition/portfolio based admissions are less dependent upon the CLAS adcoms review (although CLAS must confirm the student is acceptable and shows ability to succeed in academics at 'SC), I wonder if the CLAS adcom driven request for mid-term grades may not be so automatic?

Just trying to offer some ideas of what may be going on. It’s really hard to take all this waiting anyway, but when your status seems out of alignment with others, it’s really stressful. FWIW, my S had no status updates at all. I read all the status threads and just wondered why his page only listed one date in November. That was it.

Best of luck to your S, btw.

Thanks Madbean. Yes, my son is applying to Thornton. But so are his two friends that he’s comparing mail with, albeit to different departments within Thornton. That’s what’s so crazy-making!

But one other thing. S was a USC summer seminar student, and as a result, still has a seemingly active myUSC account and USC email with the same ID as his application. I’ve begun to wonder if that isn’t causing some glitch. But I still think we’d sound crazy for asking, not to mention how long it would take to explain the question!

Lots of people post that only 1000 students who got invites for the Trustee and Presidential Scholarships are the only ones who have gotten scholarship information but I know that is not the case. At my son’s school 6 kids got in during the first wave. One Trustee, Two Presidential, and three Dean’s. I am not sure how many Dean’s scholarships were handed out in the first wave but MAYBE there are more Dean’s to give out and the kids who did not get a “no scholarship” letter are in consideration for a Dean’s scholarship. There is always hope! Also, maybe different schools hand out the Dean’s scholarships when they are ready to admit to their school. I know students who have applied to SCA, have gotten in to USC in the CLAS as undecided with a letter stating that SCA has yet to process their creative applications and they will know at a later date if they got in to SCA. (but they are in the University with a Dean’s already)

I also never received the letter. I was admitted but it was for the Bacc/MD interview, not scholarship interview. But i still find it strange i was never notified.

call and ask…maybe it got lost in the mail.

I e-mailed them and they said I was supposed to receive the letter but apparently it was lost in the mail. So those of you who are still wondering might want to contact your admissions officer.

no letter here either. i just emailed them, i’ll let you guys know what they reply.

i did, however, get the “send us your sr year grades” letter. from what i read, most people got the ‘no scholarship’ letter that also asked for their grades. maybe only receiving this ‘send us your grades’ means you may be considered for the deans? or maybe it just got lost in the mail, i’m just speculating.
