No real 'permanent address'... what should I do?

Hello. I’m at a student at a CCC and I plan to transfer to a UC after 2 years. I just arrived in California from Georgia and am making California my home state. I do not speak much with my family back home and am here to stay. I will be living in the dorms at my CC and renting a room in the same town between semesters.

Can I use my dorm address as my permanent address? It will really be my principal address as I’ll be there for 10 months of the year. I need a permanent address for my driver’s license, records, voter registration, vehicle registration, and bank accounts. These are things needed for the UC people to approve in-state tuition.

Also, on the FAFSA app concerning one’s permanent address, it says “Do not use…an address you use only during the school year.” Unfortunately, my dorm address will be my only consistent address over the next two years.

Any insight? Thanks in advance!

I think CA has very strict rules on moving to the state and expecting to get in state tuition. Because it sounds like you are starting at a CC right away, that may block your plan to get in state tuition if you transfer to a UC.

If it says don’t use the address that you’re using for school, I would say dorm address is out. It’s very hard to get in-state residency at the UCs FWIW.

thanks for replying. i’ve read their guidelines for residence and will be trying to follow them to a T. i know that it may look to them that im only in CA for school purposes, but ive really decided to relocate my life to CA and going to school is only a part of that. I guess the burden will be on me to prove that to them…

@Ohm888 yea thats what my guess is too. only problem is that i wont be having a permanent address for the foreseeable future. i have to figure this out because i need one for many documents and what not

I would contact the UC residency office for advice.
