I plan to apply to schools that recommend submission of SAT Subject test scores. However, I’m unable to make any of the testing days (I’m a senior btw) due to complications with other unforeseen conflicts, but I do have a SAT test score that I’m happy with. Would I still be put in a disadvantage if I submit a SAT score rather than SAT II scores?
Depends on the college
Generally schools that recommend subject tests expect to see them unless it’s a financial hardship. Subject tests are not a replacement for the SAT or vice versa.
Maybe. I’ve certainly heard of very strong students who are accepted by top colleges (who “recommend” SAT 2) without submitting SAT 2. Disadvantage? Probably. Maybe other aspects of your application will make up for it. Do you have some very strong AP scores to submit?
I have 4 APs: APUSH, World, Art History, and English Language. I received 5s on all, and I self studied for Art and World. If I were to take the subject tests I would take Eorld History and English
The SAT isn’t a substitute for Subject Tests, and AP tests rarely are unless the school specifically says it on their admissions web site. For schools that expect to see them, yes, you will be at a disadvantage.
It sounds like there are no options, so it is what it is. Hopefully the rest of the application portfolio can outweigh it.
fwiw, it’s much better to take Subject Tests before you’re already a Senior - typically at the end of the year in which you cover the material. My D took one as a Freshman and will take her second at the end of Sophomore year.
@RichInPitt Thank you for your reply. Not taking the subject tests much earlier is a regret that I cannot reverse. In my defense, my school and Tennessee in general emphasizes the ACT very heavily. It was only recently that I’ve heard of the SAT Subject Test. Would colleges take that into consideration?
@momofsenior1 Thank you for your reply. I understand that the SAT is not a replacement for the SAT subject, but would it mitigate and minimize the disadvantage a little bit?
No.
No. You know about them now.
As mentioned upthread, it is what it is. You don’t have Subject Tests and are choosing not to take them. For many colleges Subject Tests are optional. For those colleges you are fine. For those colleges that “recommend” with the expectation that you take, your application will still be considered if you choose to submit. But for those very few colleges, you will be at a disadvantage.
