No scholarship payment during co-op/internship

My son got a scholarship from Upitt, as we read through the requirement to keep the scholarship, “University of Pittsburgh Guidelines for Undergraduate Academic Scholarship”, we stumbled into the last sentence of point no. 7 “No scholarship payment are made during any term in which a student enrolls in a coop/internship program”.
My son is admitted to Swanson School of Engineering as a freshman.

Being able to participate in a Coop/internship program is important to him. As an OOS, attending without a scholarship would be very expensive. To my understanding, he can do it in Summer time, right?? The scholarship payment are for Spring and Fall.
Anyone has any experience with this problem?
Thank you.

When he is on coop - he’d not be attending class - so he wouldn’t need the scholarship to pay for tuition, he’d actually be earning money on coop to hopefully cover all living expenses. Coops aren’t necessarily within Pittsburgh, some people go on co-op outside of the area.

@ Amandakayak, thanks so much for your info.

To add on to @amandakayak‌’s comment, the scholarship can be applied towards 8 semesters of tuition (assuming it is a half-tuition/full tuition scholarship and not a book scholarship). IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH SEMESTERS THESE ARE

That means if you want to use it fall of freshman year, not use it spring of freshman year, then use it summer after freshman year, you still have 6 more semesters to use the money. This money can even be applied towards tuition costs of study abroad.

If your son does co-op, he will NOT be enrolled at Pitt for that term. He only pays a small fee to be considered a student (because the co-op for that term is considered a 1-credit class). During his co-op he should be paid a reasonable amount, some even give a living stipend on top of this. If his co-op is in or nearby Pittsburgh, he could stay in his dorm (I believe) and if he wanted to, take 1-2 classes at night and pay per unit of class. If his co-op is elsewhere, he loses his housing for that term (i.e. fall or spring) with no guarantee of housing the other term. Regardless, the semester he comes back to return to classes full time, his scholarship will cover tuition for that term.

@opossum, you’re really awesome!
