No School for You!

The fires have shut down UCSD for the next two days. How will it affect your mid-terms?

actually it's a good thing because my math test has been rescheduled to be on monday. it was previously planned for friday which happened to be at the same time as the chancellor's run, which i had prepared intensely for.

It's probably going to be more then these two days.

i think school will be closed this whole week

So how many people are packing up and heading home for the rest of the week, just to get out of the smoke?

Is there a way to go anywhere "home"? As I have heard, the northbound traffic is paralyzed ...:(

ear UC San Diego Campus Community and Friends,

After careful consideration and conferring with the Office of the
President and our Academic Affairs colleagues, we have decided to
cancel classes for the rest of the week. Due to the continuing
uncertainty of the fires and extremely poor air quality, we want
to put all precautionary measures in place. Many of our faculty
and staff and their families have been directly affected, and we
are certain that classes and standard operations will not be available
at full capacity this week.

Most non-essential personnel are asked not to come to campus, but
we know in some cases there are those who might be needed. All
personnel considering coming onto campus, should check with your
department.

UCSD Medical Center and Medical Group employees are expected to
report to their jobs as scheduled. ALL UCSD Healthcare clinics and
hospitals are open with the exception of Scripps Ranch Family
Medicine.

We want to assure parents and families that students on campus have
access to essential services and we have plans in place if the need
arises to take further measures. Residence, dining halls, and the
student health center are open and staffed to serve students.

Please note that the Chancellor's 5k scheduled for Friday, October
26, is canceled, as is the Preuss Classic Cars fundraiser.

At this point, we plan to resume a normal class and work schedule
on Monday, October 29. We ask that you check the website regularly
to make sure that all current plans are intact (<a href="http://www.ucsd.edu)%5B/url%5D">www.ucsd.edu)</a>.</p>

We will be determining the impact that these mandatory class closures
will have on required class time and will be providing additional
information at a later date.

Sincerely,

Marye Anne Fox Paul Drake
Chancellor Senior Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs

If you can't leave please stay inside as much as possible and minimize your exposure to the bad air.

Is it possible for students to leave the area now? Is the public transportation functioning? Can they go to the airport and fly home?

Two friends of mine are flying home, and two suitemates are taking the train.

We got our kid out, thank god! Cloud 9 shuttle still functioning, airport still open. When they canceled classes for the rest of the week, he grabbed his books and his laptop and boogied on out. There's better air here, and Mom and Dad can sleep easier, and there's not much to do there, with everything shut down.

If you can't leave, guys, please stay out of the smoke! This would be the time for some marathon LAN parties, right? Stay safe.

My son has left the school and is coming home. He is flying in with a couple of his friends. I think the college shuttle is still working and the airports are open as of now. My son is just bringing his books, his wallet with his ID, and his laptop. If you are staying at the school please be safe and follow all the safety procedures. Let us hope that the fire dies down soon. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families and the college kids still in SD.

With such a wind gusts is it safe to travel by plane, by train or by car? Which way is safest?

This is my 2 cents strictly but car may not be that safe (depends on where your home is, of course). I found this on the <a href="http://www.ucsd.edu%5B/url%5D">http://www.ucsd.edu</a> home page:

Parents considering plans to have their children return home:

By car: Check travel conditions at <a href="http://www.sigalert.com%5B/url%5D">www.sigalert.com</a> or call Cal Trans, (800) 427-7623 for the latest road closures.

By air: Lindbergh Field (San Diego's airport) is operating. The best way to reach the airport is via taxi or carpool with fellow students.

By train: Check Amtrak for schedules, as other areas in Southern California may be impacted. The best way to reach the train station is via taxi or carpool with fellow students.

I hope this helps.
