I'm finishing up my sophomore year and no one will take me. Ive applied to over 30 places, and the only offers I've gotten are unpaid which will not suffice: I'm broke. So are my chances for I-banking ruined if i can't get an internship this summer and work at a donut shop?

You need to go for unpaid, it’s how employers filter through the lower classes. It’s a hoop that you need to jump through to prove implicitly that you are aren’t a plebeian. After all, you wouldn’t be broke if your family were rich.

I kick myself for all the times I worked paying jobs instead of getting internships. Now I know when I walk into an interview that any high-brow, smug employer - such as the types that people here aspire to work at - has little respect for me or my family after reading my resume, and will conduct the interview with this in mind.

What school are you from?

BC-carroll

Your chances are ibanking weren’t high anyway, just take what you can right now.

well obviously chances for I-banking aren’t high for anyone. Not even wharton students. just wondering if not getting an internship this summer, and only one next summer hurts me badly

Really? I thought Carroll was a great business school (Top 10) and that finding an internship was easy? What’s your GPA and major?

What’d you expect to get as a rising junior anyway?

I’ll take anything business related. Just want some experience. Major is 3.8 and major is finance by the way

What’s your cum GPA?

3.8 is not a strong GPA.

^^^

Sarcasm?

3.8 major gpa with a couple courses is meaningless, what’s your cum? I would easily have internships with a 3.8 cum from BC.

^^ You don’t have to satisfy his curiosity.
It’s common not to have meaningful business related internship after your sophomore year as the majority internships are for juniors. But you need to be more selective about what you will do this summer to pave way for next year. An unpaid, but meaningful internship trumps a paid menial job.

My overall GPA is 3.8. I’ve taken 15, 3-credit courses but don’t know what my cum gpa is.

But yeah its looking like i might have to take an unpaid and still work at the donut shop in the side :((

soccer, it’s really not that bad. Most firms aren’t looking for rising juniors.

If there is any possible way that you can swing it, I would urge you to take the unpaid internship. The fact that you are actually getting internship offers after just your sophomore year is a sign that you are doing well. There are lots of juniors who wish they were in your position. Quite frankly, because of this lousy economy, there are fewer internships available this summer than in previous years and there are far fewer paid internships – not just in I-banking or finance, but in any field. Having two meaningful internships before you graduate (one this year and one next year) will look good on your resume and will certainly improve your job prospects.

All,

How does a student get a paid or unpaid but meaningful summer internship offer after sophomore year? Is it mostly from family connections, school, or professors? What courses would be helpful for the student to get such opportunities? It is like taking a course in the college or study abroad. It is a worthwhile investment as long as one can learn something solid.

Thanks
