No support for Pre-Med students at UT?

I'm concerned because on the applytexas application it says this: "UT Austin does not have an undergraduate major called "pre–med". No special advising and other support is provided for undergraduate students in all major programs who are interested in further study in the health professions."

Is there no Med school advising at all? People keep on telling me that UT is a great school for Pre-med but this leads me to believe otherwise...

We have a Health Professions Advising office but it’s hit and miss. I’ve spoken to one who was extremely helpful and one who constantly contradicted many things I knew to be true. In any case, there are enough pre-meds here to network and learn everything you need to on your own.

Uh… premed is not a major. When someone ask me how do they apply for a PreMed major, I question their capability to handle PreMed if they don’t even know that it’s not a major. PreMed is a series of courses (Biology, Chem, Organic, blah blah). Just google things abouts PreMed and you can learn a lot more about it.

****. Don’t say rude stuff on this board. It’s meant to help people, not criticize

PjLlyod, yes I know Pre-med is not a major. I know any major can apply to Med school; I’m not ignorant. However many schools have advising for Pre-Med students to help then with med school admissions and to make sure they are fulfilling the requirements. I know that Texas A&M has this, and they even offer mock MCAT’s and volunteer opportunities. So my point was does UT Austin not have these type of opportunities?

If you get into the Health Science Honors program, take it. I believe that program has ~95% acceptance rate into med school in the program’s history. Even if you don’t, UT has plenty of support for pre-med.

There is plenty of pre-med suppot. From the College of Natural Sciences (CNS)

My daughter is in Plan II but is double majoring in a CNS major. She finds her CNS advisor extremely knowledgabe in Med School Admissions. In Plan II there is a Plan II Pre-Med Society and this is another great source of knowledge.
