premed at ut austin?

okay, i know ut austin doesnt have a premed program...to the best of my knowledge. but is anyone taking a premed curriculum there? like what are the precentage rates of longhorn students accepted into med school? are there premed advisors? etc..

ive heard that if you do a bioengineering major there, and graduate top 10% of your class, you have a very good chance getting accepted into med school. anyone liked to confirm this?

any info would be appreciated. i think im gonna have to go visit one day.

UT austin college of natural sciences is pretty good.
especially Dean's Scholars.

i don't know what you are talking about.

thats great, but hows premed, not natural sciences, at ut austin?

natural sciences is what most people take for premed

yea, College of Natural Sciences! can anyone tell me about its quality? is it ranked in anything? is it worth attending out-of-state to go into that college?

I tried calling UT last week to ask about % of acceptances into med school and whatnot from UT. The lady told me she has a binder that has all of that stuff in it but can't say it over the phone. However, I could come into their office and look at it freely. Too bad I live in 8-9 hours away. haha I told her that so she gave me some crappy site isn't affiliated with UT Austin at all but rather has some stats concerning med schools in Texas. it's kind of like that one texas site that applies for all the Texas schools. i dunno, it was okay but pretty worthless. so any other information would be awesome.

anyone?

Baylor had some really bad stats on the UT system while making theirs seem really good. I wonder if it has any merit to it or if it was just biased sources?

sorry, but can you clarify what you mean by "Baylor had some really bad stats on the UT system while making theirs seem really good."
I don't quite understand

thanks :)

Well when I applied to Baylor University, they gave us a little piece of paper that had "Have You Considered Your CHances FOr Being Accepted Into a Top-Ranked Medical School" on it. The Baylor rate of acceptance was like in the 50-60%'s while the UT "System" as a whole was in the 20%'s, way below the national average and Baylor. The title of te graph was "Acceptance Trends among Baylor, National, and UT System Applicants, 1988-1997

only 20% of those who apply from UT Austin get into med school? whaaa that can't be right! where did you hear/read this? i'd like to see for myself because, damn, that % is HORRIBLE

The quote says "the UT "system" as a whole" There are a TON of UT schools out there. Ut Austin is probably the most selective of all the schools in the UT system.

So if you're going to UT Austin then you need to find the separate acceptance numbers for just that school. I'm sure that number will be quite different from the number of acceptances to medical school from the UT system as a whole.

hmm...i was thinking about calling UT to check on the acceptance rates..but i guess not anymore. i live three hours away from austin, but then again, i dont really want to go just to ask a simple question..lol.

on the topic of other ut campuses, i found that utd's premed to med acceptance rate is pretty high (muchmuchmuch higher than baylor's), so im considering going there now for premed. all in all, i still i hope i make it to baylor/rice premed prog at rice. =)

EDIT: i forgot to mention...i've also heard (from a friend who's going to ut and doing premed), that if you do a bioengineering major at ut, and graduate top 10% of your class (at ut, not at your highschool), the acceptance rates into med school hit over 90% or so. not sure if he was exaggerating or what, but any confirmation on this? (getting into the top 10% shouldnt be toooo hard...right?)

The Baylor report was given by Baylor so you know . . .

I wonder if there's a site with acceptance rates and all that good stuff. It would come in very useful right about now.

UTD has a good premed? My dad, aunt, and uncle are doing whatever they can to prevent me from going there for some reason.

Get a gpa of over 3.7 and a good mcat and they all have good acceptance rates. A & M sent us their figures for the above and they were high. UT's don't seem to be as accessible.

here's the site the lady gave me over the phone when I asked about med school acceptance #s of UT Austin undergrads.

it's www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/

click on Entering Class Statistics to view the stats of 2001-2004.

like i said, the site is alright. it has stats concerning med schools in Texas including average GPA and whatnot. does this help at all? unfortunately, it has nothing specific about any undergrad programs that helped students get to the schools. it just has stats of ppl applying to med schools in TX.

hmm...bleh, i wish ut would just post their stats (maybe its embarrasingly low...?). anyone visiting ut anytime soon? itd be nice if someone posted the stats and stuff.

Why would it be embarassing low? Tell me!! Ahhhhhhhhh! UT is frustrating me with scholarships and other stuff like no other.

because ut isnt really known for their premed curriculum/program. furthermore, if it was a good rate, wouldnt they post it up online? dunno..thats just my theory. i hope i didnt scary you. lol.

they do have a good biomedical engineering prog though.

however, as i said before, if ut's premed to med rate is as low as a think it is, i say its better to go to utd for premed.

Where are UTD's rate for acceptance posted? My parents are really against me going there because they believe that it is a bad school for medical because they specialize mostly in computer science, engineering, etc.

check your PM maxlee

my history prof's daughter did premed at utd. utd is very focused on sciences of all sorts.
