No thanks, Harvard

Ahh, bob jones is really freaky

its official...i just turned down MIT for Penn (which wouldnt be so bad if it werent for the fact that everyone in my school assumes it's penn state)

Haha, at my school no one knows anything about Penn. When everyone asked why I was dressed up for my interview, and I responded with "Penn," I either got an "oh" or a "Penn State"? ~40% students going to 4 year schools (half of them to NC State) doesn't help and neither does our guidance department.

macrospect columbia all the way

"the one who wants her deposit back is choosing a less prestigious school..in fact a LAC"

you act as if there's something wrong with LACs, i turned down UChicago for a LAC.

A classmate turned down Princeton for UPenn.

I guess Wharton kicks ass compared to everywhere else.

I turned down Hopkins, Michigan, WashU St. Louis and Carnegie for Case for BME. Yes I know, not as "prestigious" to you guys but I got a scholarship, it is good in BME and I like it.

A friend of mine got into both Brown University and Johns Hopkins. His financial aid covers nearly all of the tuition, but he is adamant that he pays NOTHING. We tell him to get scholarships--he doesn't think he'll get them or something and that he'll still have to take hundreds upon thousands of dollars on loans.

So he's going to Rollins College.

Well I turned down Northwestern and UNC to go to Boston U (for communications)....sent my deposit in, but I just got an increased scholarship offer from Penn State Honors...and now I can't figure out what to do...any suggestions on that one?

Was the Penn State offer significant? If so, I would consider it.

BU brought their cost down from 45,000 a year to 29,000...Penn State's has come down from 21,000 a year to 16,500.
My parents are giving me 19,000 wherever i choose to go.

Yeah...go to Northwestern or UNC - both have a better quality of life and WAY better academic programs overall, and in journalism.

a friend of mine turned down THE trinity college in dublin to go to some stupid place in new zealand......i have no idea why

a friend of mine is turning down carnegie mellon for rutgers pharmacy...and i know why (lack of confidence after quite a few rejections).

My son turned down RPI and Stevens for Manhattan. He hated Troy and thought Stevens was over-priced. Got a nice Presidential scholarship to Manhattan college and liked the small campus in New York City.

I turned down UCLA and Berkeley for Pomona. I know it dosen't seem like that big of a deal but everyone at my school that dosen't know much about colleges thoguht so. i guess the names Berkeley and UCLA are big here. It was a hard decision but f it. the people that really know college usually regard Pomona very highly

Pomona is better than those in my book...

well... i wouldnt say pomona is better than berkeley..
more like they are equal but different

pomona, swarthmore, amherst, etc all go in a separate category. these are people with different preferences, most likely not indicative of their personal intellectual capabilities.

macrospect...go with Columbia. Columbia College is actually the smallest Ivy (at just over 1,000 students per class) and the student/faculty ratio is 7/1.

There have been more Nobel Laureates at Columbia than at any other university (72 in total, including 1 last year). The faculty at Columbia is truly incredible. New York City has the most opportunities of any place in the world and Columbia actually has a campus, which acts as a haven from the city if you need it.

Good luck in your choice. I hope to see you at Columbia's campus in late Summer.
