i hope you are being sarcastic of the TTT thing

No, he's being serious...I doubt he'll be able to get a job at McDonalds with Harvard on his resume--no chance.

ha... i wouldnt tell mcdonald i graduated from harvard... when i started working as a waitress junior year i had to lie and say i had a 3.7 (instead of 4.0) just to fit in since everybody else was like... 3.0- material and i didnt wanna look too smart

I turned down Georgetown, Cornell, and Wake for UNC

i know 3 people that turned down harvard: 1 for washU, 1 for Rice, and 1 for KU. my friend also turned down rice and williams for vanderbilt. also know someone who turned down cornell and dartmouth for ithaca college...

A friend of my sons turned down Harvard for Williams. I believe she wanted a school more resembling her high school. My son turned down JHU for Rice, and has never regretted it.

I think those are still prestigious schools...you know, like Rice and Williams

My friend turned down Harvard for Nevada State... she was recruited for both Basketball teams, but she decided she liked Nevada State better, plus she got a better scholarship to the later and didn't want to put her parents in debt.

I would also agree that Rice and Williams are both prestigious schools. However, we've found here in New England, JHU is much better known than Rice.

Last year, a senior turned down Brown for CUNY Brooklyn College Honors.

This year a kid is turning down Georgetown, Drexel (on the medschool track I think), and Hopkins (if I'm not mistaken) for Brooklyn College Honors as well. It guarantees him a spot at SUNY Downstate Med school and he has a full scholarship for undergrad, but it's not like the kid wouldn't be able to afford a school at full price (parents are both doctors).

Even if a family has the resources to pay for an expensive college, it doesn't mean that the $150-$200K for a costly private school is a wise use of those resources.

I have turned down Harvard for Williams... :)

Shhhh, Roger! You'll put yourself out of business! :) :)

I've just decided to turn down Cornell and Stanford for Wellesley. Does that really count, though?

I turned down Cornell for Johns Hopkins. $ was the main reason.

Turned down NYU for Boston U...does that count?
BU=free ride
NYU=expects me to pay 30K a yr.

FYI from the New York Times about a week ago:

aliasholic: ill see u next year in wellesely! hope its as great as i imagine since i didnt wanna go visit. i already know im going there for sure i didnt see a point in visiting, but now i wish i knew what the dorms looked like

collegeparent- I liked the term "prestigious poverty" in the artlicle, lol.

One of the reasons people want to shout out about the places they are rejecting is because of all this crazy prestige school stuff. It is good to stick a finger in the eye of this process. Let the next crop of kids and parents know that it's not all about the rankings!

Now we need to stop buying that U.S. News issue, so they will stop printing the darn thing!
