No thanks, Harvard

Well, I took my name off the waiting list for Notre Dame, and I turned down Case Western Reserve University for OSU. It wasn't just about money, although I did have a full tuiton scholarship at Ohio State. In the end, OSU was a better fit for me, and I know I'll be happy there. I love the the rigorous academics in their honors program, the campus, the social life, and, of course, the sports! Go Bucks!!!!

Turned down Cornell and others for BU Honors. My friend turned down U of P for Pitt Honors.

I'm turning down Duke and Emory for UGA's Honors Program. In terms of money, town atmosphere, opportunities, music scene and music program (school of music), etc. I just feel like I'd get more out of it. Neither Duke nor Emory felt like home.

i understand that prestigous schools all have a yield, which is never 100%, and most of the times 30% of the students do not actually accept admittance. but then we have to keep in mind that almost 90% of those 30% are cross-admitted to other prestigous schools, and the scenario becomes, they reject yale for harvard, or harvard for stanford...

do most people all have a concept of prestige in the back of their mind, or are we REALLY going to college "just for a good education". i mean... if it was 23k for harvard vs 18k for, lets say, U of Arizona, most people fork over the 5k difference and take harvard. would someone actually not care for the prestige and take U of A becuz they wanna be close to their family/friends

Yes, people do it every day. Many successful studies have shown that the starting salary differences between elite university grads and no-name school grads tend to even out quite a bit if only the BA is achieved anyway.

You wound me, Amused! I guess I'll have to secretly root for Duke. Shhh! :)

A 1600-er at my school turned down Princeton to go to the University of Chicago....no monetary reason involved...truely amazing although I can totally see y..

Hey, Husky-Sky, is this the same person who is now changing their mind about University of Chicago, and wants their deposit back?

its just 300 dollars... id pay another deposit if i had to... u wanna b happy for the nex 4 years, rite?

turned down carnegie for fordham. Just cant leave the city and the family.

Turning down Brown, U Penn with Ben Franklin Scholarship, & Georgetown for Duke. Not sure if I am dropping prestige but I have turned my back on the "Ivy" schools.

i'm turning down harvard, mit, wharton's M&T program, and cornell for the Robertson scholarship at Duke

yeah, it sure is crazy to turn down the 10th ranked school for the 20th!

who are you talking about ClaySoul?

Yes, tomorrow I'll be officially turning down Dartmouth for University of Michigan. I'm a bit bummed, but money is money; I have more than enough for UM, and I don't have enough for Dartmouth. Hopefully I'll be back in the Ivy League for law school. Oh well.

Hey Kb, any attempts to negotiate with Dartmouth?

Oh yeah.....did the best I could...in the end..it just won't happen. (tear)

i wouldnt say turning down penn for duke is a drop in prestige though.

I am OFFICIALLY (I've made up my mind finally) turned down Dartmouth and Cornell for Duke. I talked to several doctors at my volunteer workplace and they said i would be nuts to turn duke down for dartmouth. Basically, even though Dartmouth is in the ivy league, they said DUke is more well known.

It also helped that I had an AWESOME time at duke. Woot!

I don't think a volunteer workplace full of Doctors in the midwest is where I would get my "prestige" obeservations. "Nuts" to turn down Duke for Dartmouth? I must be nuts then, along with countless I know.

I think the bottom line is it depends where you are. Some people think Cornell is better than Duke, other think Cornell is the pits of the Ivy League, etc. They are all too similar at the top levels to choose on prestige since prestige is so vague to begin with.

Do not be offended. I applied to Darty, so I have a certain reverance for it indefinitely. However, I just think Duke is a good fit for me, you know?

Besides, they are both on equal footing in terms of academics and prestige. So, I had to ask myself.."which place would I enjoy more?"
