I sent in my application last night, and in my essay I wrote about how i want to do a profession in language but i told them the linguistics department was most interesting

I sent in my application last night, and in my essay I wrote about how i want to do a profession in language but i told them the linguistics department was most interesting

dammmmmmmmmmmit

why is that wrong?

…

I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Is it because linguistics and languages aren’t the same thing? Sure, that’s true, but they are related. Plus, MIT doesn’t factor intended major into your decision.

Out of curiosity, though, why do you want to go to MIT if you want to have a profession in a language? There are other schools which have much better foreign language departments (not that MIT’s are bad; they’re just small).

i wrote an essay on how i love latin and french and greek, but i told them i liked the linguistics department, which are different

and mit has great departments in them, so i figured i’d give it a shot

Er, you’re being silly :)

There is nothing wrong with that!

Oh yeah, you’re done for now. No one who likes studying languages is ever interested in linguistics.

Now they know you’re dumb.

end sarcasm

Seriously, chill out.

Well, it’s better than saying you’re interested in the Latin and Greek departments.

I say I’m interested in both mechanical and electrical engineering (and computer engineering, and nuclear engineering, and…). I seriously doubt that they’ll punish you for not choosing a specialty to major in as long as you have a general idea of what you want to study.

At one other school I can’t name students don’t even pick a major until Sophmore year.

We don’t pick our majors until the end of freshman year.

oh yea, you aren’t gonna get in for sure now…

Psh I am a frosh at MIT. I didn’t say any interest. Just said I like science…

P.S. FYI MIT’s linguistic is bomb, one of best in country :)

MIT doesn’t have Latin and Greek…do they?

We don’t have departments for those, no. We do have two Latin classes (each half-term), though people can take language courses at Harvard if they’re not offered here.
