noise cancelling headphones

Experience with?? Suggestions for which ones to buy??

They don't work that well. I prefer using in-ear headphones like those by Etymotic and Shure. I have a pair of Etymotic ER-6i's that I use with an iPod and am very happy with them.

Check out www.head-fi.com for headphone discussion.

The best all-around headphones are the Bose ones. They cancel the outside noise pretty well, and they also make the sound really clear when you are listening to them. I'm considering buying a pair.

The Sennheiser RS 140 which is wireless, is excellent. Just arrived via FedEx today and they are excellent! There was static in the beginning, but that quickly disappeared by bumping up the sound source. Excellent!!!

Though the general rule of thumb is that you can get a much more superior wired headphone for the same price as a wireless one, but I love the freedom. Cordless!!! They do block out sound very well.

I <3 my Sennhesier HD280 Pros.

^ I was so close to getting one of those! That was actually one of my first potential headphones.

bose products suck lol.

take a look at head-fi.org

... from CNET "These headphones hush ambient noise by creating antinoise that obviates the noise at your ear. They don't eliminate noise entirely, but the better models significantly reduce the whoosh of jet planes' air conditioning systems. They're somewhat less effective at quieting the background din on trains and buses. It's important to note that noise-canceling headphones come in all form factors, from full size to earbuds."

...I bought the BOSE noise canceling ones(the $300 ones) and they didn't do anything for an environment where talking was the problem. I returned them and got a different non noise canceling and have been much happier. Like the little article I posted above says, the noise canceling works for some noises but not others. You may be happy, but if you're in a dorm environment you probably won't. Investing in a excellent quality pair of normal headphones will be better, IMO.

I own the Bose. I live in Metro DC and S goes to school in Houston. Each round trip has one 1500 mile half where the 50ish mom (me) is riding with the 20ish son. When he drives, he listens to his music out of the car stereo and I listen to mine from my iPod and the Bose. I rarely hear his music and don't have to turn up my volume to overpower his. Fortunately, he doesn't drive with his volume loud enough to vibrate the windows. Also, the road noise is really reduced. I don't have to turn up my volume to overpower the road noise. S also has a pair that he uses when flying.

I agree with anovice (and CNET). All depends on what noise you're trying to reduce. If its travel noise the Bose are pretty good, if its talking not good at all.

If you try the Bang and Olufsen Earphones, you'll forget every other headphones on this planet. After using them, i feel like burying my old headphones. A little steep, but worth it. Theyre still cheaper than Bose though.

I have a pair of bose ones, they are pretty good, imo worth the money.

The problem is, you can get a much better pair at that price.

Yeah I guess. The issue for me was whether or not the brand had some sort of representation in my ountry, since bose had I went with that.

dont get bose (Better Off w/ Something Else). sennheiser headphones are great. if you are going to be using them with an ipod or something though the Shure e4c or Etymotics are good in-bud headphones.

Etymotic ER-6i's are great. i use them all the time. Bose is overrated. they are good but you can find better headphones at the same price. i also have Sennheiser headphones. even their cheaper headphones are great quality.

The white sony ones are great

sure e2c's are great, i have a pair (got for free) and am really happy with them

Those in-ear headphones tend to hurt my ears...and they always fall out, idk if it's because I always bought the cheap ones (i.e.- standard ipod headphones)

The Shure and Etymotics look different though, hopefully they prevent against falling out and ****

the ipod headphones suck. they dont fit my ear right. the sony ones are small so they fit really nice.
