S is interested in RIT. However, their ChemE program is not ABET accredited. Now, I realize that this is a little less important in areas that do not require licensing (such as civil, for example), but what does it say, if any, about the quality of the program? All the other major engineering fields at RIT are ABET-accredited, but it seems strange that ChemE is not.

You may want to contact RIT to check on the progress of the ABET accreditation and when it is likely to occur.

While not as necessary for chemical engineering as it is for civil engineering, ABET accreditation appears to be more traditional in chemical engineering, unlike in computer science or biomedical engineering, where some high reputation schools forego ABET accreditation of their degree programs.

What you suggested may be the case. There is also something on their website that mentions some kind of advisory board that is dealing with the 2000 accreditation document, or something like that. I have emailed RIT hoping to get a response.
