Non-accredited program at RIT?

S is interested in RIT. However, their ChemE program is not ABET accredited. Now, I realize that this is a little less important in areas that do not require licensing (such as civil, for example), but what does it say, if any, about the quality of the program? All the other major engineering fields at RIT are ABET-accredited, but it seems strange that ChemE is not.

Any thoughts?

Is RIT chemical engineering a very new degree program?

[This document](http://www.rit.edu/oce/student/stu_alum_pdfs/CareerOverviews/ChemicalEngCO.pdf) says that “The chemical engineering program will seek accreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) after the first class of students graduates, in accordance with ABET requirements. Accreditation is retroactive to all prior students.”

You may want to contact RIT to check on the progress of the ABET accreditation and when it is likely to occur.

While not as necessary for chemical engineering as it is for civil engineering, ABET accreditation appears to be more traditional in chemical engineering, unlike in computer science or biomedical engineering, where some high reputation schools forego ABET accreditation of their degree programs.

ucbalumnus–

What you suggested may be the case. There is also something on their website that mentions some kind of advisory board that is dealing with the 2000 accreditation document, or something like that. I have emailed RIT hoping to get a response.

thanks for you reply.

any more thoughts out there?

MADad : Obviously, ChemE is below standards.

RIT is lowly ranked anyway.

Thanks to all–when all was said and done, RIT’s financial aid offer was lacking, so our questions about their ChemE program were moot.

S deposited a UMass-Amherst and is happy with his choice at this time. Lots of new science construction there.

By whom based on what? CMU lists RPI as its peer along with the likes of MIT, Duke etc.

RIT is not the same school as RPI.

^Ah, I need my reading classes! Sorry!!!
