Non-audition Music Tech Programs

Hi, so I’m a junior in High School right now. I’m looking to do music technology/industry as a major, but I’d prefer to avoid auditions. I’ve been doing musical stuff (chorus, musical theatre, drumline, and i used to do band) for a while, but I’ve never been talented or serious enough to actually get awards or do auditions. My grades for the my 1st 2 years of High School aren’t great, but I’ve been improving this year and plan to show major growth in the rest of this year and next year. My GPA is only an 85 and my current ACT is a 26, but I plan to retake it. I’d prefer to stay somewhat around the East Coast (so no California). Also, I’m thinking about doing a double major with Computer Science. I’m currently looking at:

Belmont University
MTSU
Drexel University
University of Vermont (yes it has an audition but I can take lessons and do it at the end of junior year)
Lyndon State
Husson University
American University
University of New Haven
Mercy College
SUNY Oneonta
UNC Asheville (also has audition but I was told to check it out)
Keene State (same reason as UNC Asheville)

Thanks a lot!

Hi. My son is a senior and applied to a few of the schools you mentioned above with the same major… He has just under an 84 average with decent SAT score (1170). He was accepted to University of New Haven and deferred from SUNY Oneonta and Drexel if that helps. Try to bring your average up so that you’ll have more choices! Hope that helps.

there are two NJ schools that fit your current academic profile and offer something that might interest you: . Jersey City State and William Patterson. Check them out. Best of luck to you!

Music technology and music industry may be quite different. The terminology varies so much that it is confusing. There is also music production, studio production, music business, audio production. Look at the other thread currently on the forum http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/2058029-what-recommendations-for-a-liberal-arts-school-with-a-strong-music-production-component.html#latest

You may not have to go to a school with this specific major either, to pick up training and skills in this area.

Thanks! Does anyone know anything about Ramapo College in NJ and their Music Production program?

I don’t have any first hand knowledge of Ramapo’s production program, but did visit with S2 for their theatre and vocal music programs. It is a lovely friendly school, with an emphasis on flexibility and real-world application of your education, in a beautiful area. Abundant internship opportunities in NYC with easy public transportation in. ALL the dorms, including freshman, are SO nice! It sounds like a good fit for what you’re looking for…definitely worth a visit if that is feasible.

P.S. You might want to check out the College of St. Rose, too.

Hi. If you’re willing to consider the Midwest, check out the School of Entertainment Industries and Technology at Minnesota State University Moorhead in Fargo-Moorhead. Graduates have done really well. Here’s the link: https://www.mnstate.edu/entertainment-industries/

I’m not specifically looking at Midwest but im not against the Fargo or grand forks area. Also I’ve visited st rose before and they have an audition for their program and it sounded pretty intense

Rowan in jersey is another school with the program and university of the arts in philly … my son is a junior in high school and exploring the same … also looking for a summer program.
