non-drinking options?

hi, I'm applying RD to colby. I really love almost everything i've read about the school (I haven't visited it yet), but I'm a little concerned about all the sources that identify it as a place where drinking is just too popular. I'm not against alchohol, i'm just not really into the whole getting-wasted-at-parties- every-weekend-night thing...are there decent non-drinking alternatives? and would i feel uncomfortable as a non (well, mostly non :) )-drinker?

merci!

Howdy again, theHyacinthgirl!

Yep, it's me again, the same guy that shilled for the theatre dept. here over in another thread. Non-drinking options, eh? I was worried about the very same thing when I came here, and rumors of violent drunken riots the year before didn't help matters. (Don't worry, we haven't had any this year...so far.)

First of all, if you really don't want to deal with the stench of booze and ambling drunkards (not that we have those at Colby - wink wink, nudge nudge), you can choose to live in one of our peerless, beerless chem-free dorms. The rules are quite simple - no alcohol or drugs in the dorm. If you wanna go party and drink, you can, as long as you don't return to the dorm visibly intoxicated. The chem-free dorms also hold occasional events for their residents - as do many dorms on campus.

There are many clubs on campus, and a student activities board, so there's usually something going on - and, as these are school-approved, they rarely involve alcohol. And not everybody goes out partying every weekend - being a busy little bee during the week sometimes leaves you too tired to do much but stay home and relax.

Socially, there are very few people at Colby who will judge you based on your alcohol intake. People here tend to understand and accept individual decisions. It really is a nice atmosphere.

Cheers!

hey, entree!

thanks so much for you help. I didn't think of the substance-free dorm option, but I'd definitely consider that if I ended up going. Anyway, I really like Colby, and it's definitely one of my first choices. All the academic info, especially, looks great - it all seems to have a real intellectual intensity, and (as dorky as that sounds) I would really love to be in an atmosphere like that. I'm just hoping that the social scene isn't too intense for me. Although I guess it'd be pretty much the same anywhere, right?

anyway, thanks again :)
