Non-ivy-type schools with good programs in these majors?

I don't know what people here would consider great, really. I just did my thing in high school and didn't worry about it much.

Check out:

Carnegie Mellon University
Johns Hopkins University
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Virginia
U. Of Chicago

It is basically Alex's list but sexified.

^ "Non-ivy types"

katho, did you have insane stats or something?

UT-Dallas is notorious for giving out scholarship money. The academics there are great, but a degree there isn't as prestigious as an UT-Austin degree. http://www.utdallas.edu/dept/ugraddean/scholar.html

From what I've heard the job opportunities are great at UT Dallas, though. My mom work for a computer company out in Dallas...so yeah...I've heard a ton of good stuff about UT Dallas and not so much about UT Austin around there.

Maybe it's just because I'm from Texas, but UT Austin is not exactly a wow or anything. I mean, if you're instate and in the top 10% you get in automatically as long as you apply by the December deadline. Good school, but not a big deal.

I think you grossly undervalue the prestige of UT Austin based on only the admissions guidelines. UT has some of the best profs and facilities in the country and stands with most top state schools in this regard.

UT-Austin does have a lot of job opportunites for computer science majors (Austin's nickname is Silicon Hills). However, at UT Dallas it's so much easier to get a scholarship.

And as katho said, UT Austin is not exactly a "wow" in Texas. People know it's a good school, but it's considered along the lines of a Texas A&M more than a Berkeley. But at least in my area (Corpus Christi), UT Dallas gets as much "wow" as any of the regional schools (UTSA, TAMUCC, UTEP, TAMUK, etc.) and isn't recognized as much as it deserves to be.

Exactly. UT Austin to an out-of-stater and to an in-stater are two totally different things. It's known to be a very good school, sure, but it's really not impressive to anyone here. At my school people ask if you're going to A&M...if you say no then they usually say, "Oh, so you're going to UT?" (I loved the look of shock when I told them that I was going to Louisiana Tech over A&M and that I didn't even apply to UT...most folks still think I'm going to LSU, though shrugs). It's just not a big deal.

I'm very sure that UT Austin has great job offerings as well, I'm just most familiar with the Dallas computer companies since my Mom works out there. And the scholarships are great...apparently even when you don't apply :/.

I guess Ivy-Type would cross out Stanford, Duke, and Northwestern :) but take a look at those anyways

Mich, UVA, UNC. UMD, PSU, Lehigh, Bucknell might be match schools with good programs throughout
