Someone in advising said it is hard to get credit for non-NYU affiliated abroad programs. I really want to go to Russia. Can someone shed some light? Is this true or what?

shadowzoid,

This sounds about right. Russia is not a Study Abroad Center for NYU, nor is it even an Exchange Partner. Which means, there is no formal structure for studying classes in English and ensuring that you are taking courses that are equivalent to the courses you need to fulfill NYU major or elective requirements in order to graduate in time (4 years).

Though it just occurred to me that if you have a semester’s worth of AP credits (16 credits), you may still be able to graduate in 4 years even with the one semester abroad.
Then you have to work out a more “relaxed semester” in Russia, maybe with some Language course or Cultural Immersion/ History courses. However, that would mean work for the Study Abroad program to set up a program for you individually in Russia and to make connections with a college there that teaches in English. Unless you are fluent in Russian already?

By the way, you are interested in the IR major, right? That has very rigid major requirements which I am not sure you can fulfill in a Study Abroad program that is not affiliated with NYU.

I would say you have a number of obstacles to overcome even if NYU agrees with this individualized Study Abroad experience.

well its not like a program would have to be made individually for me. Bard College offers a study abroad program with Smolny University for many majors, one of them being IR. I would just need NYU to approve Bard’s program, and Bard would take care of the rest

i don’t know if you read this but it might help. if its a legitimate program i think they should be able to accept the credits. it really depends on your major though, for example if most of your required courses are really specific than it might be harder to do an outside program.

scorpqueen,

That is a very helpful article. I hope it is also to OP. The only thing I am concerned about would be the IR major in NYU’s Politics Dept. They have very specific requirements. If I recall correctly, OP still has to see if admission to the major will be possible after becoming a CAS student uon completion of LSP. Then the next hurdle would be to run this by the Study Abroad program and the NYU Major Dept.

It is good to know that others have done these non NYU-affiliated study abroad programs (individually crafted).

By the way, SZ, it is good that there is an IR program at Bard College. Again, I think you need to see if it is acceptable primarily to the Major Dept. at NYU.

I think the chances are good. I just emailed the IR adviser today and she said that the IR department is very flexible in granting abroad credit

Hey, Shadowzoid,

That is good news. Finally a break. Now if we can only get you into the IR major??!!!
