I recently visited NYU and I was told of their stellar study abroad program. It was made to seem as if I could study abroad at multiple locations, multiple times. Is this true? If so, what are the requirements for the program, what is the process like, and how does the program compare to other schools? Also, are there any other colleges or universities with study abroad programs like this one?

NYU seems to have well organized programs abroad and enough offerings in their key locations abroad to enable students to continue fulfilling requirements for their degree while studying abroad.

While some schools still seem to leave it more or less up to the student’s own initiative to study abroad, NYU appears to actively encourage it through their various programs, like LSP, scholarship programs, etc. I think they truly believe having a global perspective and experiences with other cultures will enrich the person and the person’s education.

I know some other schools also have a similar perspective, e.g., USC (Southern CA.), but what I have heard is that there really are a number of course offerings and tremendously enriching experiences for NYU students abroad. My son is very much looking forward to his study abroad in Shanghai.

I am not sure about going abroad for more than one semester. I think the norm is to go abroad first semester junior year (for one semester?). Though I am sure that if that is what you want to do, it is probably doable but it is something you want to discuss with your advisor to make it work; that is, make sure you can plan your schedule well so all your major requirements will be met while doing more than one study abroad semesters.

Perhaps some of the current students can chime in here.

My daughter knows someone who has done three semesters of NYU study abroad, each in a different location. It would be difficult for a science, math or business student to do three semesters, or for a Tisch student, but it’s totally do-able with many other majors. If you go on the study abroad site, you can find the lists of courses offered by location. And the costs are the same as in NYC. I believe housing is less expensive in some cities, so that gives extra for travel. And travel as a student, staying in hostels and using student fares for travel, is very reasonable.

Hi
My D has been accepted in ED-II in BPE,Stern School of Business at NYU. The Business and Political Economy (BPE) Program at Stern allows students to combine their interest in Business with Political Science and Economics in the real world. They spend Sophomore year in London and first semester of Junior year in Shanghai. For students who already have traveled or would like to and who have a flair for languages and also have strong Math foundation and have a passion and are fascinated with how countries interact (involved in activities like School MUN during their High School years) and truly want to pursue and combine their interests then BPE is the right Program for them. The 3 semesters of study abroad is a perfect real life Cultural and academic education that cannot be got inside a classroom in one place.

Imagine the 18-19 year olds learning about Business, policies and economics of a region affecting business decisions beginning in NYC and then on in Shanghai and London ,both business hubs of their region and then coming back to NYC,the biggest and most influential financial hub, makes me want to go back to college again.

As parents it is our job, I believe to teach our children to learn not just the meaning but understand the word “Empathy”. The earlier in life they interact with people different from them, the faster they will grasp and appreciate and like the differences. The empathy extends to everything in life from food, culture, value system, business, politics, color of our skin, religious beliefs, art, basically everything. OK I know this is too long, the point is Study abroad program just does that ,takes them out of their comfort zone and helps them become global citizens much faster.
