Other Universities:

-Cornell (ED)
-Texas A&M

I think you have a very good chance of being admitted to UT.

Since you really like Cornell, I hope that if you do not get into Cornell ED that you are applying to a number of schools that are like Cornell but give good merit aid (bringing their cost down to the cost of UT). UT is great but it is so different from Cornell.

Did you ever try the ACT?

Thanks for the reply, no I never took the ACT, probably should have, but now it’s too late. I really like UT, great facilities, great education and great atmosphere. Of course, Cornell will be my number one choice since it’s an Ivy League, and their research facilities are amazing, but my chances are too low in my opinion. I really want to get into UT Austin on the first try, but CAP will be my other option. As for other schools, I’m not applying, unless anyone has some good/realistic suggestions: Majoring in Biology (BA) —> Medical School

Post in the “College Search” about what you are looking for and people will give you suggestions for schools that offer some of the things you like about Cornell but are easier to get into than Cornell.

Cornell is great. If you get into Dean’s Scholars for bio, UT is great. It is unfortunate that UT is not a sure thing for you; that top 8% rule is brutal. (As I said, I think your chances for UT admission are very good.)

How about the University of Rochester, a medium-sized private in Rochester, NY? Excellent science (biology and labs), nice size, nice merit aid. (That’s just the first school that came into my mind. You’ll get other ideas if you go to the college search area of this forum.) Or how about Syracuse?

Did you consider Rice?

I’ll look into those, thanks a lot!

I really liked the University of Rochester. It IS expensive, and although my son was accepted and had strong stats, he didn’t get much merit aid. There was no way we could afford it.

Alright, thanks for the info.

Rochester tuition is the same as Cornell tuition.

Rochester offers varying amounts of merit aid, from $2000 up to full tuition. The OP has a good chance for merit aid there. (Cornell doesn’t offer merit aid.)

The environment at Cornell is pretty intense.

Well, maybe the OP will have more luck than my son at Rochester. My son’s stats were a little stronger and he got $8k in merit aid. Tuition and fees were over $54k for this year. Even Amherst offered more, and they don’t give merit aid! I have to say, our financial aid results were baffling.

And maybe the kids we know who got great aid at Rochester were all National Merit Scholars - maybe they throw much of their merit money in that direction.

^ Yes, that could be! My son didn’t do as well on the PSAT, then somehow he did great on the SAT.

Any other tips to increase my chances of getting into UT?

Dude, I hate to burst your bubble, but I think it will be tough. Last year at my high school, I knew people that were in the top 11% and 12% and didn’t get into UT because of the top 10 rule. Your SAT doesn’t really seem that high and your rank is somewhere in the 20% range. But then again, I’m no college admissions counselor and I hope I’m wrong. Good luck though!

Thanks, yeah it will be tough, I’m just looking for some hints/tips before I send my application in. I’m not in the top 10 because I opted out of taking more honors classes freshman/sophomore year. (Something that I regret)

However, I have shown dramatic improvement, from 1 honors during freshman year to 5 APs this senior year. I hope they will notice the upward trend. My school is also EXTREMELY competitive. The top 3 at me school always go to HPYS, this year, our valedictorian has all As, and took most APs that are offered by College Board, our salutatorian got 2400, and number 3 met the President a few times, and is getting full-ride to MIT, so it is pretty competitive.

I’m applying to Natural Sciences, hopefully that will help.

bump bump bump

Bumping this post up, I realize my chances for Cornell are about 1%-5%, so forget about that, I just want to get more input for UT, thanks.

Hi I was just wondering if you ever did get accepted?

Here is AirForcePilot’s post from 1/5/12, on the transfer thread:

Aw good for him, I asked becuase I’m applying next year and my stats are close to his except I want to major in phycology

Actually my rank is a tad higher but still
