Non-traditional Student

I recently finished 2 years at the local community college at the age of 41. I was accepted to Stonybrook School of Social Welfare and CW Post in September. Financial reasons make Post nearly impossible and Stonybrook is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Because I am a single mother of 3 children, I was considering an online program at CUNY to finish out my Bachelors and also because I will be going back to work and need to work out a schedule for work, school, and kids that will not kill me or make finishing impossible. I was also considering CUNY for Sociology or Psychology and then getting my MSW later on. Any advice would be appreciate.

Hi, I’m also a non-traditional student! Congratulations on getting through community college while taking care of three kids.

Can you do a blended program with some classes online and some in a traditional classroom? I’ve taken both and while I have been glad to have the option, I wouldn’t want to do nothing but online classes. At my school the online classes tend to have twice the work or more and I don’t always feel like I’m learning as much as memorizing trivia.

Thank you! I mixed online and on campus at the community college. Unfortunately the online program at CUNY is one or the other. If I register as a student on campus, the do have some online classes, but they are limited. The online classes were more work than on campus, but it was very convenient for me and I enjoy writing so I did not mind all of the assignments. In fact, online gets a bad rap, but I found that my most of my online classes were more thorough than on campus.
