Non-Transferable credits

I currently attend a CC in Maryland and i am a computer science major. My CC has an agreement with University of Maryland College Park so i’ll have somekind of advantage when i apply. The problem is that UMD does not accept any credits from computer science courses taken at any previous school. I have already taken half of the required courses for my major at my cc and it’s a huge waste of money because it won’t even be considered. A friend suggested that i only take electives from now on and wait until i transfer to take classes for my major but i’m not sure if it’s okay to do. Any other ideas on what i can do? I need all the help i can get. I feel like i’m currently throwing money that i don’t have out the window.

@Yvanne, I honestly don’t see a problem here. If those classes are not transferable, don’t take them. You might need to retake them at a 4-year university, and it’s a huge waste of time and money. I am not very familiar with UMD transfer requirements, but there must be something you can take instead - GE, classes for alternative major/minor maybe? As for the classes that you have already taken, call UMD admissions and ask if you can do anything with those. If not, then take a deep breath and move on to the classes you actually need. What’s done is done.
P.S.: I know how difficult it is to just disregard all of the hard work, but sometimes you just need to accept that there is nothing you can do and move on. When I moved to California 8 years ago, I already had about 59.5 units from a 4-year Russian university. And when I was told by UCSD admissions advisor that I had to start over, because they would not be able to transfer any of those, I felt like I wasted 2 years of my life (and a heck lot of money). But it was back then. I focused on what I needed for transfer and now I am at 60+ units again, applying to schools. The faster you move on, the better. I am sure UMD transfer advisor can help you figure out what exactly you need to take and when.

You need to meet with the Transfer Advisor at your CC, and with the major advisor who is responsible for helping students get into UM-CP. Make sure that you are following the formal degree plan at your CC that will guarantee your admission into the Comp Sci program at UM-CP. The people at your CC should know exactly which classes you ought to be taking.

To give you a better idea of what your CC should be able to provide you, here is the Transfer Planning page from Montgomery College http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/edu/plain.aspx?id=54547

You also need to learn the details for MTAP. That is just about the best way to guarantee a smooth transition to UM-CP. Here is the MTAP page at the UM-CP website. http://www.admissions.umd.edu/requirements/MarylandTransferAdvantageProgram.php

I am also a Computer Science Major in community college and going to transfer to UMD in Fall 2016. What you said is correct, UMD doesn’t take Computer Science credits from my community college either, as of right now I only take general education courses like calculus, biology, english, and social sciences. but when I go to UMD i will take the computer science courses there
