I'm currently a new student at CCBC. The school has transfer programs with UMD, UMBC, and Towson, as well as a couple others. I had a few questions...

What is the Computer Science program at UMD like? What kind of classes can I expect to take?

What will it take for me to get into their Honors program? As of now, I am taking 3 classes. One class is a remedial and only the other two count. If the semester ended now, I'd have a 3.33 GPA.

CCBC probably doesn’t have the same direct programs of transfer with UMD CP like Montgomery College, PGCC, etc. They probably track to UMBC and Towson. That said…an easy way to tell what classes you will take is to look at this: https://cmns.umd.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/docs/4yr-plans/CMSC.pdf

That GPA will not get you into the Honors program. You need 30 credits to transfer. My kid got into computer science with about that GPA, but had about 60 credits (started CC early at HCC). I would strongly advise you to take your first two Calc classes at CCBC if you can. Not sure what your remedial classes are, but if it’s math, you have an uphill battle. Make sure you take the correct Calc classes to map to MATH140 and MATH140 at UMD. You can use this to figure it out:

http://artweb.usmd.edu/

Gen ed classes will transfer: Freshman English, many of your gen ed requirements…But make sure to use the above to see what maps. Some things my kid took that seemed like they SHOULD have fulfilled certain Gen Eds didn’t.

Your computer science classes WILL NOT transfer. You can try to test out of them, but they are very specific (Java, etc). So no matter what you take at CCBC for comp sci, just use those to see if you’re cut out for it.
