noob q's

hey guys i just have a few questions
ive noticed how everyone wants to go to MIT. So do people with engineering and computer interests like me want to go, or just everyone in general? and does mit just accept book worms with 4.o's n stuff like that, because im takin ap java, ap comp science, ab comp science, etc? also, how do people brag that theyve joined a bajillion clubs when im in robotics, and i go 4 days a week and about 3-4 hours each time? i dont have time for other clubs (21st at world robotics comp). im a freshman in highschool so im not too smart on this subject. plz help me out here and point me in the right direction

-There are lots of engineering/computer people that want to go to MIT. There are also a number of humanities people that want to go to MIT. But, there are also people (like me) from various disciplines (I'm going into engineering) who don't want to go to MIT.
-MIT accepts many people with 4.0s but they want people with strong extra curriculars and in addition to strong academics. They want people that will contribute to the campus community and getting good grades in itself will not suffice.
-Dedication to one club is important. But, if you are going 4 days a week, what are you doing the other 3 days? And if it's 3-4 hours a day, you get out at around 5 or 6, you could do something else at night. You should have more than 1 extracurricular activity.

if he's getting out at 5 or 6 that means he has to come home likely do homework for 2 hours and then be able to relax/watch tv from 8-10...

seriously! what are the chances that another club would function on the days im not in robotics? ive never been in other clubs so i dont know if its as time consuming soo... i can see how i could fit in maybe another club but it seems like i wouldnt have time to work( yes i have to work for my stuff)...

the marines is looking better and better to me lol

One reason MIT gets a lot of attention is because the board has several MIT students/adcoms (molliebatmit, pebbles, benjones, etc.). MIT seems to be very friendly and helpful in admissions (i.e. admissions blogs), which is probably another reason.

"he has to come home likely do homework for 2 hours and then be able to relax/watch tv from 8-10"
-I am not MIT material and I know I don't spend 2 hours per night on homework. Lots of MIT students can get done their homework in less time, perhaps he should be more efficient.
-You're saying he has to relax for 2 hours and that he's going to bed at 10, which is very early. He's competing with the top students in the US. Look at the MIT forum. See if the students on the accepted students forum spent 2 hours/night relaxing and went to bed that early! I'd be shocked if they did.

"seriously! what are the chances that another club would function on the days im not in robotics?"
-You learn to fit things in. Time management is extremely important for college.
-If another club doesn't work, there are lots of things you could be doing that are more flexible. One very good idea would be to start doing research. Find a professor that you could do research with and the professor will probably let you choose 1-2 days a week to come in. Then you can just do it when you don't have robotics.

I am going to Carnegie Mellon. I'd say my extracurriculars are average for CMU. I would expect an MIT student to have stronger extracurriculars; perhaps recognition for research. Here's what I did during robotics season:
Mon-Fri:
Fix computers during lunch at school
Robotics from 2:10 to around 6 or 7
Monday night meeting for youth group at 7-9, eat dinner in car
Research Thurs night, leave robotics a little early
Play guitar for around an hour around every other night, typically at around 9-10PM
Homework got done in school, or at night

Sat:
Robotics from around 10-6ish
Youth group program at around 7-9 or 7-10

Sun:
Free day...guitar, sailing, homework, socializing and miscellaneous (see below)

Miscellaneous: Whenever I have time late at night or during school, things like planning youth group programs, working on youth group website, planning robotics stuff, looking for fundraising for robotics, etc.
