I have recently been accepted to and enrolled at UNC, and had a housing Question. I know a lot of freshmen live on south campus, but i really don't like the suite style housing they have. Do many freshman live on north campus where the hall style buildings are?

Very few … mostly in Living-Learning communities, Connor or Granville. The vast majority of first-years are on South campus. For this coming year, even the Honors Carolina first-year dorm is moving from Cobb (North) to Koury (South).

My son lives in Lewis on the north campus. He didn’t ask for it but was assigned it. They try to group freshman together where ever they assign them, so there are two or three floors of them in that building. There are also some in one of the other buildings in that quad. My son was wary at first about missing out on the “freshman experience” but really likes it now.

It depends on what you’re looking for.

I’m not saying that north campus dorms are “no fun” or that people living there don’t like them (as the poster before me stated, they tend to end up enjoying it, all dorms have their pros and cons). However, there is absolutely no substitute for the freshman experience in south campus. I wouldn’t trade my time there for the world.

What don’t you like about suite style? If you think it is limiting socially, you are giving up way more social opportunities by not living in a south campus high rise. People usually leave their suite doors open anyway (except the winter months) and I always moved between suites to visit friends, etc. Also, you get to interact with suitemates A LOT (as opposed to hall style where it doesn’t have that inclusive feel). In most cases you become really close with them and it’s like living with some of your best friends. Even in the case you don’t end up becoming good friends, it’s still a nice and more comfortable atmosphere. The bathroom is private, so it’s never as awkward as the public floor bathrooms in hall-style dorms. I can’t tell you how nice it was to be comfortable enough around my suitemates to go to the bathroom while they were brushing their teeth or taking a shower with someone else in the room as opposed to always worrying about it in communal bathrooms. For the most part though, since everyone is on different schedules you basically have a private bathroom.
