I am a senior in High school in Minnesota. I am now exploring college options and am looking for some opinions. I want to go to a big school with sports and a fun college experience. I do not have grades to get into the University of Minnesota or Wisconsin-Madison so there is really nothing else in the resiprocity area (MN,ND,SD,WS) that appeals to me. Ole Miss caught my attention because tuition only cost around 13,000 per year for out of state which is pretty affordable compared to most out of state institues. Does anyone have any input on how the transition from Minnesota to a southern school like ole miss would be?

40% of my southern state school is out-of-state and there are plenty of kids from up north. I know people from New Jersey, Michigan, Maryland, Ohio, New York, and a few other places.

I think for some people it’s a culture shock at first, but southerners are pretty welcoming. They’ll always be friendly towards you. It’s a little bit of a two-faced attitude, because people are taught to be friendly to everyone even if they don’t like them.

I have a couple of friends who went north for college and they really miss “southern hospitality”.

How yankees handle coming down north really depends on their attitude in my opinion. If you go to Ole Miss thinking Mississippi is a state full of hick-rednecks and you make that attitude known, then you will not have a good time there. If you’re more open-minded, then you’ll be fine. :)

Cool, this is good to know. Thanks for the info!

AUGirl,

funny you say that Southerners are fake nice. I am from MN and here were an expression - Minnesota nice (meaning fake nice).

OP,

I know several MN students who went to school in South and did not fit in culturally - had to transfer.

^same here, lerkin. A guy I went to high school with transferred to the state school near me. I’m still in community college. Both of us are transferring out for next year because we’re both so unhappy- mostly because of rude people/not fitting in.

Ironically enough, he’s transferring back up north because he said people are nicer up there.
