Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm considering transferring to University of South Carolina next year. I am from Wisconsin. I tend to have a lot of southern values (I'm christian, conservative, love country music), but I'm wondering if I'll realize when I get there that southerners don't really like people from the north. Will I have a hard time getting into a fraternity since I'm not 'southern'? Am I just overthinking things?

Yes, they shoot all Yankees on sight.

Haven’t gone to school there, but I’m sure you’ll be fine. You’ve been watching too much TV. I’m sure you’ll get the occasional ribbing about being a cheesehead, but other than that, unless you give them a hard time about being Southern KKK slaveholding racists, you should be warmly welcomed. Just ask the best place to buy white dog. Not “a white dog”, just “white dog”.

Big state u’s have student from everywhere. Both my S’s went to big state u’s (in NC). One of S1’s very best friends was from Iowa and one of S1’s roommates was from Chicago. Lots of families from northern states have moved to southern states. Go into it with an open mind. You’ll be fine.

When my son, born and raised in Maine, attended UT-Austin, he was amazed at how friendly everyone was. He said, “Mom, people just come up to me and TALK to me!”

I grew up in Austin, A nice guy from Wisconsin was in two of my grad school classes at UT. My dad was his supervising professor for his master’s thesis. We started dating, and his friends (half jokingly) said, “What, are you CRAZY? A Yankee dating his southern professor’s DAUGHTER?” We ended up getting married, so it worked out pretty well.

Don’t argue that Wisconsin is better than South Carolina and you should be fine. Also remember that most students at USC will not be like the stereotypical Southerners. Try not to act surprised if you find that some of them despise country, vote democrat, don’t believe in God, etc.

Do students at northern schools not like southerners?

I’m a Southerner, and I’m agnostic, liberal, and not a fan of country music.

Southerners are a diverse group of people; we are all different from each other. Some Southerners do not like Northerners, but most Southerners don’t dislike a person just because of where they’re from and take the time to get to know people, just like people from everywhere. Fraternity selection is very competitive in the SEC, but you won’t get excluded just because you’re a Northerner.

(And better yet, we wouldn’t consider you a Yankee. You’d be a Midwesterner to us.)
