Northampton: What do you think?

Hey guys, what do you think about the town of Northampton? I loved it when I visited Smith, but I'm just wondering if any current students could weigh in. Do you do lots of things in the town? Are town-gown relationships good? Thanks!

Town-gown relationships are pretty good, we all sort of get along well.As far as doing things in town, I go there to eat out quite a bit, especially when Smith is serving the dreaded "London Broil" (not dining services best hour). Me and my friends go to Herrell's the amazing ice cream Mecca very, very often in all kinds of weather. Obviously, if you're 21 or you have a fake id, there's a lot of bars you can visit (you can even go to Packard's if you're not 21 as long as you don't order alcohol. HTey have food and a pool table and a kareoke night)

We shop in town for "Secret Snowflake" or Big sister/little sister gifts. I've been to a couple of great concerts downtown, though I wish I had gone to more. I go to church in town at this beautiful catholic church next to Smith called "St. Mary's of the Assumption," and I am also a card-carrying member of the Forbes Library, the amazingly beautiful old public library which also houses the Calvin Coolidge presidential library.

I also worked in town last year, which was an interesting experience. I made more money than I could have ever hoped to make working at Smith, but it was tricky to work my town job around my school vacations, which is obviously not a problem with on-campus jobs.

So that's an idea of the variety of activities a Smithie can engage in with the town (I'd say I'm pretty typical). As far as frequency of visits, there can be times when I won't get off "the hill" for two or three weeks in a row and my life is very smith-centric, or if i do leave, it's on the five college bus to see a movie at the mall or something. There are other times when i go into town several times a week. It varies depending on weather and amount of work I have to do. But Noho is definitely an asset for students, it helps to know that you're not living in some isolated backwater.

I loved Northampton! I also would hop on the PVTA bus to Hampshire Mall. I went off campus mainly just to get away from the intensity at Smith. It's so weird like that- you walk away from the campus onto Main Street and suddenly, it kind of feels like a different world (probably the architecture don't match). The food is just amazing- I always seem to gain weight when I visit for a weekend! My friends are nuts about Faces- a very trendy, cute, young people's shop with lots of random and fun stuff. It's a "funky" town with lots of local places so it feels pretty special to be in NoHo.

I go to Hampshire and end up in Northampton pretty much every weekend at some point. Usually it is to eat dinner or go to the movies. It is a great town with a lot to offer in terms of stores, restaurants, etc.

while i didnt go to school in the area, i adore northhampton. one of my favorite college towns. i also know that mt holyoke students flock there regularly.

northampton is quaint. just that. good food and cute to look at it- but offers little to nothing as far as enterainment or things to do. unless you're 21, and like the bar scene you're pretty much SOL finding things to do on a weekend night in noho that dont involve food.

although pearl street, a small venue, occassionally gets good acts- they dont make up for the essential lameness of the village called noho.
