DD Junior is looking at LACs (preferred) and Unis for 3.5 gpa (academic,uw: overall is 3.7 with music included) in Northeast, from Maryland to Maine. Looking for reaches/matches/safeties.

Very strong record in English at top HS; should score around 700 on SAT CR. Average in Math and will be lucky to hit 550, so guessing 1250 SAT.

Interests are theater (BA, not BFA), English, good student orchestra. Hooks are viola (probably will minor in Music) and political involvement.

Would love to live in a large city, or at least have one within reach on weekends. Especially fond of Boston and NYC. I think she'd like Philly too.

Some thoughts: Lafayette, Gettysburg, Goucher, Holyoke, Clark, Emerson, Bard, Sarah Lawrence, Hobart, Hartt, Ithaca - I have no idea if she'd like these, but we're planning a tour in November

Will also apply to UMass as safety and NYU as reach. What about URI, Maine?

Things that are important to us:
Great English department
Student orchestra that is really good
Allows non-theater majors to audition for shows
Beautiful campus
Solid academics with some structure in the curriculum

Not important:
USNWR ranking
Greek life (presence or absence)
Sports

My son is a senior and is looking to major in English and minor in music. He is applying to several of the schools on your list, so I know something about them. Since you did not mention cost, is that not an issue?( lucky you)We visited Goucher and he loved it. Beautiful campus. Small( is size a factor?) with alot of personal attention. Towson is a nice area and Baltimore is closeby. Gradewise you should be OK. Bard is a similar school but much harder to get into, in a remote area. Ithaca is on my son's list also. Great writing program and music school. I am not sure which school Hartt is? Emerson is a specific kind of school for people who know that they want to be writers or film makers or actors. English is not Gettysburg's strong suit. The largest majors are business and poly sci. Clark is on my son's list, but we have not visited yet, although I like what I have read. Hope this is helpful. Perhaps you should check out some website, before you decide who to visit.

DEFINITELY apply to Vassar. amazing english department, big reputation, and about an 1:25 drive from NYC. Its very selective though... so you may want to concider ED II because it matches your criteria almost perfectly

Your list of schools does not match your daughter's interests. The geographical limitation imposes some problems. Lack of actual standardized test scores raises others. Skidmore College & Connecticutt College are much more in line with your stated interests than are any of the schools mentioned in this thread. Oberlin & Kenyon--but they are in Ohio. Northwestern University in the Chicago area has a school of music and open auditions for 18 or 20 different theatre productions all at the same time. Ithaca is a possible match. How liberal is your daughter? Certain schools suggested, such as Oberlin, Vassar & Smith are quite liberal as is NYU whereas Gettysburg, Lafayette & some others are quite conservative. Lafayette is probably not an appropriate choice. It is difficult to assess "great English dept." for a liberal arts school.

Holy Cross is 40 miles west of Boston and 40 miles north of Providence and the college provides free shuttle service to Boston, Providence and local malls in Worcester, New England's second largest city. Holy Cross and Mt Holyoke are the only New England colleges ranked in the top ten of the nation's most beautiful campuses rankings per 2009 Princeton Review. HC has the highest academic rating (98 out of 100) of any Catholic college in the US per Princeton Review.
