Northeastern fires half its RA staff; tosses them out on the street

I just posted this over in the Northeastern forum, but I wondered if anyone here has any ideas or suggestions I can pass along? I don't know how to post the link to the original forum post, and I imagine moderators don't want me repeating it here, so anyone who can hop over there and take a look, it would be appreciated!

NU implies Northwestern. You might want to edit the thread title.

ugh, sorry, I can’t edit now. Well, it’s northeastern for anyone interested, and that is where the thread is.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/northeastern-university/1479444-nu-fires-half-its-ra-staff-6-weeks-before-finals-tosses-them-out-street.html

I’m looking forward to hearing more info about this incident. So far, people have found almost no press coverage.

Correction, at this point there is NO press coverage or mention in social media. Difficult to believe.

As I mentioned in the Northeastern forum, I don’t think it even occurred to the RAs to go to the press; they are all panicked and trying to follow university procedure by filing their appeals. The terminations were late last Thursday. They like their college, want their jobs (and dorm rooms) back, and want to stay on the good side of the administration. Geez, tough crowd; I’ve known one of the RAs for years now – great kid, no reason to embellish, and I believe that the facts are as presented.

I, too, find this story difficult to believe. This would be very bad for Northeastern University’s reputation if indeed half of the RAs were suddenly fired. Please do let us know when you find out the rest of the story.

Illogic posted a link to a campus (I think) discussion board that has more details.

http://www./r/NEU/comments/1atkmc/ras_are_getting_fired_so_here_are_some_tips_and/

April fools day is a few days off. Is this true?

Well the link I posted didn’t work, but if you go to the Northeastern board, the one Illogic posted does.

It seems like one half of ONE staff of RAs at Northeastern has been sacked without warning for not doing their rounds.

So now they’re out of lodging for the rest of the semester.

could you spell the site with spaces in-between. cromette?

wait, don’t. I think it might be against TOS. I’ll figure it out.

Maybe try here.

The link is on that page

thanks! :)

It’s a little odd to say “they were fired for not adhering to one of their duties” and then not saying what the specific duty was that they were fired for.

I hear from someone at Northeastern. They said the issue was that the RA’s who were supposed to be on duty and in specific buildings at certain times weren’t there. This is what they are telling the the new batch of RA’s applying for next semester.

It is outrageous to me if RAs were thrown out of their rooms for failing to make rounds. They should have been given written notice. This is really poor management. These are 19-20 year old kids for the most part.

ETA – any time drastic punishment is taken out on a class of employees (as opposed to one or two), imho management needs to look in the mirror as to how this happened.

the only logical reason I can think that any school would do this is because something really bad happened when an RA wasn’t where they were “supposed to be,” and the school is on the hook for that kind of thing, particularly if it is actionable.

I think, if something really bad happened and the RA wasn’t where he/she was supposed to be? And one of our kids was involved? Different, outraged thread.

fwiw

Poet, that may be, but I would be asking where was Residence Life director BEFORE the really bad thing happened, and has RD issued warnings?

It may well be, in a purely conjectural way, that they actually aren’t going to say what happened, for privacy reasons, or because they are afraid of a lawsuit.

But, the only way I can imagine their attorney’s would let them leave themselves open to this kind of potentially legal issue is if there is something way worse in the background.

Given what we know about college campuses, there are many possibilities. Unfortunately.

yes, it supposedly was failure to cover all buildings on their required duty rounds. Something that was never stressed in any trainings or evaluations, amidst discussions of all their many duties, as being more meaningful or important than the other 100+ duties of an RA.

NO WARNINGS, and NO writtten (or oral) reminders or the importance of abiding strictly to that one requirement, and I do not believe ANY of the terminated RAs was ever given an evaluation that mentioned that they were lacking in that area. It sounds like there was a kind of “sting” operation, where they performed this “audit” by checking that duty rounds were being performed to a tee (although the contract is vague as to what the actual requirements are). NO notice before the Thursday firings, with a 3-day appeal process, then out they go if appeals denied. No housing offered. They still have classes to attend, finals to take, and they have to eat, and find somewhere to sleep.

I’m not aware of an incident that prompted this whole thing, but I can say that there were many well-liked RAs caught up in the “sting” who contribute greatly and in many areas to the Northeastern campus community.
