It was merit. We received no financial assistance. GPA was unweighted. I think that she really took the time to write impressive essays. Hope this helps!
Looking back at last year’s information, it looks like the Honors scholarships range from $21k, 27k, or 28k per year… that seems to have been the highest outside of NMF which is usually (up to) $30k per year.
Thank you both! Very helpful and appreciated. @andtam @twicemama
Top merit scholarships may also include a grant for international coop or study, in addition to the regular scholarship.
Correct. This year’s crop of honors students get a free dialogue during the first summer after freshman year. This is worth between 2-3K. Students are still responsible for the half semester tuition (they get 2 courses - 8 credits out of the dialogue). These programs are extremely popular.
There is also a global bank account for honors students that you can use for a semester about or international coop during any semester at Northeastern. I think it’s also $3K.
I can confirm that the honors merit seemed to peaked at 28K. My kid has not met anyone in honors that didn’t get some sort of merit (or FA if they were eligible).
@suzyQ7 What is a dialog?
@bethanylm291 A dialogue is a study abroad option where you go abroad for about a two months during the summer with a Northeastern professor who teaches two classes related to the area and topic of the dialogue. You can find examples at the link below, as well as an overview.
It’s very popular as it’s offered in the summer (no conflict with semesters or co-op) and still gives you two classes worth of credit that is counted as Northeastern credit, not transfer credit, which simplifies the process of going abroad.

@PengsPhils Thank you!
This thread has been so helpful! My twins applied to NEU RD in September. One has been offered $150K in merit scholarships from another school - while the other rec’d $120K merit. We are hoping for similar money from NEU. ACT is 34 and WGPA is currently 104.51 and the other is 103. I have no idea what to expect from NEU - they don’t offer stackable departmental merit scholarships do they? My sons both rec’d an additional scholarship from the business school and the other the engineering school from this other university - but they also really want to go to NEU so we are waiting till 2/1 to hear from them
It is helpful to hear all this information - thank you
Out of curiosity, if you’re kids sent their apps in during September, why not EA instead of RD?
My error, they did do EA and should hear by 2/1.
I have no idea what to expect - we are huge Red Sox fans as we lived in Boston many years ago . . . And I graduated from NEU
@clarabell2 If you don’t qualify for financial aid, the max merit scholarships we’ve seen from last year was 30K (per year) for National Merit or National Hispanic Scholar and 28K (max, per year) honors scholarship.
This, of course, could change this year.
@suzyQ7 does National merit stack on top of Homors scholarship or replace it? my son got a nice Honors scholarship but it will not be enough and we were hoping National Merit could help bridge the gap.
@croaswife. NMF merit would replace any other merit award.
thanks @TomSrOfBoston
Is it possible to earn merit money after your first year provided that you do well? Is that common at Northeastern?
@Collegelife1234 I’ve never heard of that, nor can I imagine anything you could do to do that. I know of some internal scholarships offered within a specific college, but those are few, competitive, and pretty small amounts. Many also require financial need.
