Northeastern N.U. in Program --> start on Boston?

Hello everyone, a friend was accepted to Northeastern’s N.U. in program, where he would have to study abroad for a semester before coming to the Boston campus in the spring. He never signed up to apply for this specific program.

However, due to family reasons, preference, and not bellowed allow to because of COVID-19, he is not able to go away the first semester.

Northeastern has been and still is by far his #1 choice and he would commit immediately if allowed to stay on the Boston campus. He was rejected by all the other targets that he applied to.

Could he be allowed to begin on the Boston campus? Is there some way to opt out f the program? Could changing his major from economics to a less popular one help? Any other info/thoughts?

Thanks so much everyone!!!

These type of programs typically exist for one or both of these reasons:

A. Load balance the fall and spring semesters (normally, fall has greater enrollment because students graduating a semester early or late are more likely to have an extra fall semester).
B. Gaming the ranking system by not having lower stat admits start on the main campus in the fall (Northeastern has been rising in the rankings, probably in part due to gaming the ranking system).

So it is unlikely that they want NUin students to start on campus in the fall. NUin’s options for first semester are Montréal, London, and Dublin (see https://www.northeastern.edu/nuin/ ). If none of these are acceptable, contact Northeastern directly to find out if other options, such as a gap semester or a semester at a local community college, are acceptable.
