I’ve posted this before but some changes have happened. I am going for biology, possibly biochem at both schools. Here’s what my decisions is down to right now:
Stonybrook University
~6k a year
Commuting 45-60 minutes each way
Close to home but would have to commute which makes a lot of things harder
Northeastern
~17k a year
Dorming with a full tuition scholarship, but room and board cost quite a bit
Has a really good co op program and other benefits
I would like to go to NEU but I’m not sure if it’s worth the 11k/year difference. Any information or advice is appreciated!
I am usually on the go where it is cheaper but in this case it is kinda of a wash, Bc SB is you commuting , if you add in R&B at SB it would be a wash, NEU is the better school, you would be in Boston which is a great college town , not to far from Suffolk county. So your talking 44k total for 4 years, but you have a pretty good chance with a CO-op to cut that down by maybe 15K, ( I assume one co-op I could be wrong) and your choices coming out of undergrad would be better at NEU, if you can scape up the money NEU is the better choice, if for no other reason you will get more out of college by living on campus vs being on the LIE.
Usually I feel that cost is a deciding factor if both schools are academically on par, but a 45-60 min commute with a full schedule, demanding classes, that can wear you out. I would invest in your future at Northeastern. The coops offset some of those costs.
Well done, BTW for creating those opportunities for yourself!
@NJdad07090
Net co-op take-home after taxes and living costs vary by major but 30K is a bit high to assume unless you’re doing 3 co-op’s in something like CS or Engineering.
That said, I fully agree with Northeastern here. The cost is not too bad in the end and not commuting will be very helpful.
@PengsPhils - I was thinking they could make 15k on co-op and that would move the net cost down to about 30K, IIRC Drexel said their kids make about 18K a co-op ( and your right I assume that meant CS) perhaps I could have worded it better.
@Emoore1259 - one other thing to consider , if campus is not open in the fall , you would not have to pay R&B in boston as well.
